Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
It is reported that the US auto safety regulator will extend the deadline for public comments on the petitions of General Motors and Ford. The two companies' petition aims to deploy a limited number of self-driving cars without manual control such as steering wheels and brake pedals.
On Thursday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) extended its public comment on GM's request by 30 days after cities such as San Francisco and Oakland in California, state transportation agencies, the National Association of Urban Traffic officials and others sought more time to analyze exemption requests.
San Francisco said the petition raised "many complex technical and policy issues related to vehicle safety that require a great deal of analysis."
San Francisco pointed out, "this is by far the most intensive location for automatic vehicle testing."... therefore, we have valuable insights to share and will be significantly affected by the outcome of the petition. "
NHTSA has the right to approve the application to allow a limited number of vehicles to travel on US roads without manual control.
Both carmakers hope to deploy as many as 2500 cars a year for carpooling and distribution services, the maximum number allowed by law. Neither company has sought permission to sell self-driving cars to consumers.
In February, GM and its self-driving technology division, Cruise, disclosed that they had applied to NHTSA for approval to deploy self-driving cars without steering wheels, rearview mirrors, turn signals or wipers.
Ford's petition, filed in July 2021, was not made public until it was published by NHTSA last month.
Ford said it planned to deploy a self-driving ride-hailing and delivery vehicle in the first few years between 2020 and 2030.
GM hopes to launch its own Origin, which has subway-like doors but no steering wheel. GM said passengers must fasten their seat belts before self-driving.
In 2018, GM asked NHTSA to allow a Chevrolet Bolt-based car that does not require a steering wheel or brake pedal to drive on American roads. At the end of 2020, GM withdrew the request.
