CTOnews.com August 21, Apple this week released official versions of iOS 15.6.1 and macOS Monterey 12.5.1, both of which have security enhancements. To bring these security enhancements to more users, Apple has released an official update to Safari 15.6.1 for Mac running macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina.

This update does not come with any new features or major changes. Instead, it fixes a vulnerability in WebKit (Safari Network engine) that could lead to arbitrary code execution. This fix is available to users who have updated Mac to macOS Monterey 12.5.1.

Here is Apple's description of the update on its website:

For: macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina

Impact: processing maliciously crafted Web content could lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of reports that the problem may have been actively exploited.

Apple attributed the WebKit exploit fix to an anonymous researcher.

Safari 16 will be released in the old macOS version soon.

MacOS Ventura is now available to developers and Beta users, and Apple has announced the launch of Safari 16 with a number of new features. The new version of Safari addresses one of Web developers' main complaints about Apple's web browser, the lack of Web push notifications. This means that even if Safari is closed, websites and Web applications can now send notifications to users.

CTOnews.com learned that other new features in Safari 16 include shared tab sets, strong password editing, improved CSS, and access keys (a new way to authenticate websites through Touch ID without creating traditional passwords).

Once Apple releases macOS Ventura,Safari 16 to the public, it will also be available to macOS Monterey and macOS Big Sur users later this year. Developers and invited users can now try out Safari 16 Beta for older macOS versions.

As for the Safari 15.6.1 update, it is now available from the Software updates menu in the system preferences application.
