Meta, Facebook's parent company, recently fired 60 labor dispatchers from Accenture using an algorithm called "random."

Meta previously signed a nearly $500 million contract with Accenture to send employees affiliated with Accenture to Meta's Austin office to work on content review and business integrity.

Meta told the 60 employees who were laid off via video conference that the layoffs would take effect on September 2 and end payroll on October 3. Meta did not give a specific reason for the layoffs, other than being explicitly "random."

Accenture did not immediately offer alternative jobs to these dispatchers, but the employees were told they could reapply for the new position within the next two weeks.

At an all-hands meeting on June 30, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg warned employees that the recent market downturn "may be one of the toughest challenges we've seen in years," and that "positive performance reviews" were needed to weed out underperforming employees. Judging from Zuckerberg's words, the layoffs may not come as a surprise.

"There are probably a lot of people in the company who really shouldn't be here," Zuckerberg said. "

Zuckerberg added: "By mentioning raising expectations, setting more aggressive goals, and ratcheting up the pressure a little bit, I think it might make some of you feel like this place isn't for you. I think it's okay to make that choice. "

Meta's all-hands meeting comes as it has imposed a hiring freeze and other cost-cutting measures, mainly because the company's stock has fallen by more than half this year.

Meta's labor cuts come just days after Apple fired 100 personnel specialists responsible for hiring new employees. Apple did warn that it would rein in spending and slow hiring.

Last August, gaming payment processing company Xsolla also used algorithms to lay off 150 employees, so letting robots fire employees may be a trend in the future.
