Semiconductor material is an important supporting industry of semiconductor industry chain, and it is one of the key links to realize semiconductor self-control in our country. On August 9, at the Semiconductor material Industry Innovation Symposium of the World 5G Congress, Shi Ying, secretary general of the Integrated Circuit material Industry technological Innovation Alliance, said that over the past 13 years, the product sales revenue of China's semiconductor manufacturing materials industry has increased by 6.8 times. The industrial application of domestic materials has made considerable progress, but the future industrial development is still facing severe challenges.

Semiconductor material is a global strategic, basic and leading industry. driven by the strong global demand for semiconductor products, semiconductor materials are developing rapidly. Relevant data show that the global semiconductor material manufacturing market reached US $64.3 billion in 2021 and will reach US $68.5 billion in 2022.

Specific to the domestic market, over the past 13 years, the product sales revenue of China's semiconductor manufacturing materials industry has increased by 6.8 times, with a growth rate of more than 40% in 2021. In terms of material supply capacity, China has an annual production capacity of 3224 million square inches of silicon wafers, 580,000 gallons of photoresist, 4.96 million gallons of polishing solution, 700000 tons of process chemicals and 200000 sputtering targets.

Talking about the challenges facing the development of China's semiconductor material industry in the future, Shi Ying said that at present, the scale of the global semiconductor manufacturing industry is growing abnormally, and the global semiconductor industry will reach 631.4 billion US dollars in 2022, an increase of 16%. At the same time, the semiconductor production capacity construction, the scale also continues to expand. The above two reasons lead to the tight supply chain of global semiconductor manufacturing materials and the increasingly fierce competition for global raw materials, but China's integrated circuit material enterprises are still in the early stage of development and are in a disadvantageous position in the supply of high-end raw materials.

It is worth paying attention to that the development of China's semiconductor material industry is still facing two major difficulties:

First, the technology of China's material industry is still developing continuously, but it is necessary to improve the purity of bulk process chemicals in advanced nodes. At the same time, KrF photoresist and developer still have technical challenges.

Second, the continuous rise in key raw materials and energy prices has increased the pressure on semiconductor manufacturing materials enterprises.

It is not difficult to see that the development of China's semiconductor material industry is facing severe challenges, but China's integrated circuit material industry is still in the early stage of development, lack of anti-risk ability. According to Shi Ying, the 100 enterprises of the integrated circuit material industry technological innovation alliance have a total sales income of 49.6 billion yuan, of which less than 10 enterprises have more than 1 billion yuan, 10 enterprises between 500 million and 1 billion yuan, and 80 percent of the enterprises have sales income of less than 500 million yuan.

In order to build the core competitiveness of China's semiconductor materials industry, Shi Ying put forward three major suggestions: first, to persist in making great efforts to invest in industrial technological innovation; second, to encourage enterprises to take favorable measures to rapidly expand their business scale through various channels; third, to extend the technological innovation and industrial development of raw materials upward to ensure the safe and controllable development of the integrated circuit materials industry.
