On August 11, US consumer rights celebrity Ralph Nader called the fully autonomous driving system (FSD) deployed by Tesla on his electric vehicles "one of the most dangerous and irresponsible behaviors by car companies in decades" and called on regulators to recall Tesla's advanced driving assistance function.

Nader said that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) must use the right of recall to require Tesla not to deploy the FSD system on his electric vehicles.

"I call on federal regulators to take immediate action to prevent the increasing number of casualties caused by negligent accidents caused by Tesla's technology," Nader said in a statement. "

More and more people are calling on regulators to make a decision on recalling Tesla's FSD system. Critics say the FSD system is no longer suitable for drivers. NHTSA is currently investigating 16 cases in which Tesla's owner collided with a parked emergency vehicle while using the Autopilot advanced driving assistance system, resulting in 15 injuries and one death. Most of these accidents occur after dark, and the system ignores the on-site control measures such as warning lights, traffic cones, arrow lights and so on. Recently, the accident investigation was upgraded to the second phase of "engineering analysis", which is also the final stage before the recall.

But so far, FSD is still a L2 advanced driving assistance system, which means that drivers must be fully involved in the operation of the vehicle.

In addition to investigating collisions with emergency vehicles, NHTSA has compiled a special accident investigation (SCI) list to investigate accidents involving Tesla Autopilot and other autopilot systems.

As of July 26, there were 48 accidents on the SCI list compiled by NHTSA, of which 39 involved Tesla electric vehicles activated by the Autopilot system, including 19 drivers, passengers, pedestrians, other drivers and motorcyclists.

Last week, the California Motor vehicle Administration (DMV) accused Tesla of falsely promoting the functions of Autopilot and FSD systems, saying the company had made "untrue or misleading" statements about the self-driving capabilities of its electric vehicles. DMV's charges could lead to the revocation of Tesla's license to produce and sell electric cars in California.

Tesla has faced similar complaints in the past. In 2016, the German government asked Tesla to stop using the word Autopilot for fear that it would mislead the public into thinking that Tesla's car could be fully self-driving. Last year, US senators Ed Markey and RichardBlumenthal asked the FTC to investigate the way Tesla promoted the Autopilot and FSD systems, claiming that Tesla had "exaggerated vehicle performance", which could "pose a threat to drivers and other participants on the road".

Nader called on the NHTSA to take action before further casualties occur.
