CTOnews.com, Aug. 11: recently, two websites offering download links to preview versions of Apple's iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS Ventura and tvOS 16 software, including BetaProfiles.com and IPSW.dev, have been shut down. Both sites are no longer accessible.

BetaProfiles.com said in a tweet that its website was closed to avoid "legal disputes with Apple", but it was not clear whether the site (or IPSW.dev) had really received any legal threats from Apple, or whether they had been closed to prevent it. Apple, BetaProfiles.com and IPSW.dev didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

In addition, Kilpatrick Townsend Stockton LLP's lawyer, representing Apple, allegedly provided Twitter with a digital Millennium copyright Act (DMCA) deletion notice involving more than a dozen tweets, including links to sites such as IPSW.dev. The lawyer claimed that the tweets infringed on Apple's proprietary beta software. In response to the copyright owner's report, all listed tweets are no longer visible.

IPSW.dev provides users with access to IPSW files for iOS 16 developer beta and other pre-released Apple software, and provides links to downloads through Apple servers, file-sharing sites WeTransfer and torrent, while BetaProfiles.com provides access to beta configuration files and IPSW files. BetaProfiles.com said that users must sign up for the Apple developer program to download the configuration file, which can be avoided.

Apple's developer beta is available only to members of the Apple developer program, which costs $99 a year in the US, and Apple appears to be trying to maintain that policy by cracking down on websites such as BetaProfiles.com and IPSW.dev.

Users who are interested in trying out Apple's beta software for free can sign up for the Apple public beta program.
