Tesla launched the electric pickup CyberTruck as early as 2019, which was originally planned to go into production in 2021, but has repeatedly delayed production and delivery. As of July, Ford had sold nearly 4500 electric pickups. It had been reported that Ford was preparing to start accepting new orders for the Fmure 150 Lightning and planned to increase the price of the 2023 model by $8500.

Last month, Farley told industry analysts on an earnings call that he thought Ford was the only company that could challenge Tesla.

But while Ford delivered more than 90 per cent more electric vehicles in 2022 than in the same period last year, the traditional carmaker still lags far behind Tesla, which has about 75 per cent of the US electric car market.

Meanwhile, the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are the two best-selling electric cars in the United States, followed by the Ford Mustang Mach-E, but it lags far behind. In the first quarter of 2022, Tesla delivered 46707 Model 3s, while Ford delivered only 6734 Mach-E.

However, some experts doubt whether Tesla can keep the crown. Last year, Steve Westly, an early investor in Tesla and a former board member, said competition was eroding Tesla's dominance in every way.
