CTOnews.com8, March 11 (Xinhua)-- Microsoft said in a filing with Brazilian regulators that Sony prevented developers from adding their games to Xbox Game Pass by paying developers, THE VERGE reported today.

"Microsoft's ability to continue to expand Game Pass is hampered by Sony, which pays for 'blocking rights' to prevent developers from adding content to Game Pass and other competitive subscription services," Microsoft said in a document submitted to Brazil's Administrative Council for Economic Protection (CADE) on August 9.

It is not clear what Microsoft is referring to here, as contracts for publishing games tend to be complex, especially when it comes to streaming and subscription services. As a result, Sony may just pay for the exclusive rights to its own streaming service, or it may have a clause in some publishing contracts to prevent some games published by Sony from being released in rival subscription services.

In addition, Microsoft said in the document: "given that exclusive games have been at the core of Sony's strategy to strengthen its position in the games industry, and that Sony is a leader in the distribution of digital games, Sony is worried about the possible monopoly of Activision games. And Microsoft said Sony "does not want attractive subscription services to threaten its dominant position in the digital distribution market for console games." in other words, Sony opposes the emergence of a new profit model that can challenge its business model.

This reveals Sony's fear of the new industry model and shows that Xbox Game Pass's strategy of providing high-quality content to players at low prices threatens Sony's leadership over years of device-centric and monopoly-focused strategy.

CTOnews.com learned that Sony submitted an objection to Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard to Brazilian regulators last month. In addition, Sony opposed Microsoft's $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard by saying it could not make a game comparable to Activision's call of Duty to Microsoft's Xbox.
