Sina Technology News Beijing time on August 11 morning news, it is reported that in the next few years, Alphabet's Google Fiber (Google Optical Fiber) CEO Dinni Jain said that the service will enter Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Nebraska and Nevada. It is also the first large-scale expansion of the business since it flew solo from its parent company Alphabet in 2015.

On Wednesday, local time, Jain gave his first interview to the media since taking office in February 2018. Google Optical has been optimizing its business for the past four years and is now preparing for a higher growth rate, Jain said.

Currently, Google Optical covers only 17 cities in the United States, and plans to cover 22 cities in the future, including Mesa in Arizona and Colorado Springs in Colorado. Google Optical Fiber will decide whether to move in or not based on the local broadband speed available.

Ten years ago, there was a perception that Google Optical would cover the United States, but that wasn't the case, Jain said.

Jia did not want to say much about Google Optical's current operating performance or financing plans.

Previously, Google transferred some of its innovative R & D businesses to Alphabet, some of which attracted external investment to prove its prospects, while others were forced to shut down or move to other departments.

The subsidiary will face the same situation as Google's fiber-optic business expands over the next three to five years.

Google Optical Fiber's business expansion this time is unusual. Recently, technology companies such as Google have slowed social recruitment, closed some marginal businesses and cut costs. The technology industry is worried about the possibility of a global recession.

Jain said that Google Optical Fiber's goal is to develop a self-reliant, self-successful business, can not rely solely on Google this "thigh" blood transfusion.

In 2010, Google began to enter the U. S. Internet broadband access market, competing with Comcast, AT&T and other telecom companies. At the time, Google co-founders Page and Brin said they had long wanted the United States to improve broadband at a lower cost, but were tired of waiting for Congress and were determined to do it themselves.

Google Optical Fiber has been a success. In Austin, Texas, and Los Angeles, California, where the service was launched, U. S. telecom operators are scrambling to launch gigabit broadband to catch up with Google's fiber optic bandwidth.

Before joining Google Optical, Jain was chief operating officer of time Warner Cable. Google Fiber made the telecoms industry crazy, he recalls.

In 2015, Google underwent a major restructuring, with businesses such as fiber optic broadband, express drones and human anti-aging technology spun off from Google's core business, which belongs only to Alphabet, the holding company. In addition, Brin and Page, the founders, began to fade out of business management.

At the time, Google Optical faced losses of hundreds of millions of dollars a year, and the company faced huge spending on network infrastructure, the development of new technologies for optical fiber communications, and subsidies for some consumer services.

Google Fiber Optics has been praised by Wall Street analysts for its greater transparency and cost control measures. At the same time, the company has limited the pace of expansion, adding only West Des Moines in Iowa, in addition to existing cities.

Jain optimized the company's business and abandoned some failed ideas (such as binding fiber-optic cables to the sidewalk to save construction time).

Last year, the construction scale of Google Optical Fiber exceeded the sum of history.

Mr Jain says the company must undergo a transformation from a strong innovation culture to a better operating performance.

In the field of optical fiber communications, Google Optical Fiber thinks it has some competitive advantages. For example, the depth of optical fiber trench is shallower than that of competitors, which can save construction time. The company has also simplified the broadband pricing system and setup process, reduced consumer telephone inquiries, thus reducing service costs.

Google Optical has 1/3 fewer customer service calls than it sees in competitors, Jain said. The current number of new user registrations is "very healthy" and better than he expected when he first joined the company.

Jain also said Google Optical is also preparing to launch small area wireless communications services based on fiber-optic networks through the "Webpass" sub-brand, mainly for large buildings with many rooms or units. In addition, in some cases, the company will also lease optical network resources to other communication service providers.
