On August 11, Beijing time, the number of Disney streaming video subscribers increased to 221 million, surpassing Netflix.

Disney also announced that customers will have to pay more to watch ad-free Disney + or Hulu content. The monthly fee for the ad-free Disney + service will increase by 38% to $10.99 in December, and ads will be included in the content if you don't want to pay more.

Disney shares rose 6.9% to $120.15 in after-hours trading on Wednesday.

Disney began betting on streaming services in 2017 to compete with Netflix as viewers shifted from traditional cable and radio to the Internet. Today, five years later, Disney has more streaming subscribers than Netflix.

Disney + customers increased by 14.4 million in a quarter, with Hulu and ESPN+, reaching 221.1 million subscribers for streaming by the end of June.

"Disney is seizing the ground, but it is difficult for Netflix paying users to grow," said Haris Anwar, an analyst at Investing. "Disney still has a lot of room for growth in markets where services are launched rapidly, and new customers will be added."

In order to attract new customers, Disney will offer an advertising version from December 8 for $7.99 a month, the same price as the current ad-free version. The monthly fee for Hulu in December will be increased by $1, and the price will be $2.

According to Disney's forecast, the total number of Disney + users will reach 215-245 million by the end of September 2024.
