On the afternoon of August 10, several people familiar with the matter revealed that the blade battery supplied by BYD has been delivered to Tesla's super factory in Berlin, Germany, which is also Tesla's first super factory to apply BYD batteries. Tesla vehicles equipped with BYD blade batteries are expected to be offline as soon as one month (that is, from the end of August to early September). It was also learned from other sources that the closely watched Shanghai superfactory has no plans to use BYD batteries for the time being.

As of press time, BYD had no comment, and Tesla in the US and Europe did not respond to emails seeking comment.

But several people familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the authenticity of the news. According to a BYD source, BYD supplied Tesla with blade batteries and shipped them to Europe. At the same time, the first batch of Tesla vehicles equipped with BYD blade batteries will be offline at the Berlin factory within a month at the earliest. A person from Tesla's Shanghai super factory said that he had not seen any BYD batteries on the production line at the Shanghai super factory, nor had he heard of the relevant plans.

At present, Tesla Berlin Super Factory mainly produces Model Y, which also means that BYD blade batteries will first be installed on some Model Y. According to reports, Tesla is also in Berlin trial production of Model Y with 4680 battery pack.

In early June 2022, Lian Yubo, executive vice president of BYD Group and president of the Automotive Engineering Research Institute, admitted in an interview with CGTN host Luo Yingchun that BYD would provide batteries for Tesla. But at that time, he did not disclose the specific timetable, he said, "We admire Tesla very much. We are also good friends with Elon Musk. We are also going to supply batteries to him (Tesla) immediately. We are all friends."

Rumors of cooperation between the two sides have been around for a long time, dating back to August 2021, when the media reported that BYD would supply blade batteries to Tesla in the second quarter of 2022. And the Tesla model with blade batteries has entered the testing stage. The news was not confirmed by both sides at that time, until Lian Yubo publicly admitted the cooperation between the two sides in the interview.

Before BYD, Tesla's global battery suppliers mainly included South Korea's LG, Japan's Panasonic and Ningde Times. Among them, Tesla's power batteries in China and Asia-Pacific markets were mainly supplied by Ningde Times, and a small part of them were supplied by LG. In April 2021, BYD announced that all its pure electric models would be replaced with blade batteries, so BYD blade batteries were mainly supplied internally, and previously only a small amount were supplied to China's FAW, Chang'an Automobile, Toyota, Zhongtong bus and other car companies.

One background of the partnership is that BYD overtook Tesla in sales in the first half of 2022. According to BYD's financial results for the first half of 2022, BYD sold 641400 new energy vehicles in the first six months of this year, a year-on-year increase of 314.9%, surpassing Tesla's global sales of 564000. Benefiting from the surge in car sales, BYD once surpassed established battery manufacturers such as Panasonic in the power battery business, and even beat LG New Energy and Ningde era in the market segment of lithium iron phosphate.

According to official data, the total number of batteries installed by BYD in 2022 was about 34.042GWh, an increase of 167.90% over the same period last year. In the first half of 2021, BYD ranked second in the country only in terms of 8.422GWh battery capacity, with a market share of 15.7%.
