According to an employee who knows indirectly about the plan, the company will provide severance pay for these employees. The specific criteria are that for every six months of work, severance pay will be equivalent to a week's salary, and these employees will receive an annual bonus in September. The employee estimates the size of the team at about 200 people. Microsoft did not comment on the news.

Microsoft had previously said it planned to lay off less than 1 per cent of its 180000 employees because of the looming risk of recession in the market. The company has also slowed hiring sharply. The MLX team originally existed as Mobile Data Labs, a startup that developed the acclaimed mileage tracking tool MileIQ. After Microsoft acquired the company in 2015, the team was first renamed under the name MileIQ and then given a new name, Modern Life Experiences, in line with its broader task of breaking through innovation. The tools MLX is responsible for include Microsoft's home security application and personal finance tool Money in Excel.

While Microsoft has had great success in selling to corporate customers with the launch of products such as the Azure cloud platform and the Office 365 software suite, its Windows Phone operating system has died out and products such as Microsoft Band fitness watches have been discontinued during the seven-year tenure of chief executive Satya Nadella.
