CTOnews.com, August 9 (Xinhua)-- Microsoft is actively promoting its cloud-based Microsoft 365 product, but it still releases a permanent version of Office every few years.

Recently, Microsoft official documents suggest that Office 2016 and Office 2019 will lose access to Microsoft 2019 back-end services in October 2023, causing concern among many users.

Today, Microsoft clarified in a statement to ZDNet:

We will not prevent the supported Office 2016DB 2019 from connecting to the Microsoft 365 cloud service. However, as announced in April 2017, we plan to stop mainstream support for Office client connections to Microsoft 365 cloud services.

This means that when we update Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, and other Microsoft 365services, we will not build around the inherent limits of older persistent Office clients that have exceeded mainstream support. Users' connectivity will not be hindered, but they may not be able to get full functionality from cloud services. As time goes by, they may encounter unexpected problems.

CTOnews.com learned that Microsoft users have to keep paying to retain access, while customers who buy permanent versions of Office such as Office 2016 and Office 2019 only need an one-time payment, with the drawback that the Office version features are fixed and have a support life (October 14, 2025).

From Microsoft's clarification, Office 2016 and Office 2019 can still connect to Microsoft 2019 services, but because the client itself is fixed, there is no guarantee that Office 2016 and Office 2019 will be available if there are new features in Office 2016.
