CTOnews.com, Aug. 9 (Reuters)-South Korea's telecom regulator said on Tuesday that it plans to investigate app store operators such as Apple, Google and One Store for allegedly violating in-app payment laws.

Last year, South Korea passed an amendment called the Telecommunications Business Law, which banned major app store operators such as Google and Apple from forcing software developers to use their payment systems, which came into effect in March.

The Korean Communications Commission said in a statement that it had conducted a check since May 17 to determine whether Google, Apple and One Store had violated the revised Telecommunications Business Law, and then determined that all three app store operators may have violated the rules.

The Korea Communications Commission added that if the investigation found that the companies had indeed carried out prohibited activities, strict measures would be taken, such as corrective orders or fines. Prohibited behaviors include app store operators unfairly delaying the censorship of mobile content, or refusing, delaying, restricting, deleting or blocking the registration and updating of mobile content using third-party payment methods.

CTOnews.com has learned that potential fines for violations could be as high as 2 per cent of the average annual revenue of related business practices. Apple and Google have yet to respond to this.
