On April 23rd, Canonical announced the official release of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. The release includes both the desktop version and the server version, and users can upgrade from Ubuntu 18.04 or 19.10. Unlike other versions, the LTS version means that users will be provided with long-term free security update maintenance support until April 2025.

Ubuntu Chinese official website announced Ubuntu 20.04 LTS main new features: GNOME 3.36 and performance improvement, Yaru theme and new wallpaper, Linux kernel 5.4, startup interface display brand LOGO, improved ZFS support, smaller system image files, GDM support for multiple monitors and pre-installed models will get automatic system configuration. At the same time, the Ubuntu website recommends a minimum system configuration: dual-core 2 GHz processor or higher, 4 GB system memory, 25 GB disk storage space, support for DVD CD-ROM recording or USB port installation, and Internet access.

Judging from the information posted on Ubuntu's Chinese official website, Ubuntu 20.04 LTS version places particular emphasis on its high security and high availability.

From a security point of view, Ubuntu 20.04 LTS version has the following improvements:

1. Kernel self-protection measures have been used to make the control flow more complete and stack collision protection has been added to forward-looking enterprise security systems.

2. Secure initiation (Secure Boot) is introduced to protect the underlying attacks and attacks from the Advanced persistent threat Group (Advanced Persistent Threat) hidden tools. For example, the local version of the Kubernetes package MicroK8s.

3. General multi-factor authentication and secret-free authentication introduce fast authentication-Fast ID Online (FIDO) to reduce social engineering attacks.

4. Added native support for AMD secure encryption virtualization and accelerated memory encryption designed for data protection in use, as well as over 256 threads and high-performance extended AMD EPYC processors.

5. As a new simplified VPN protocol with modern encryption default settings, users will eventually have a secure channel out of the box on the latest Ubuntu version.

6. Ubuntu Pro, which has been supported for 10 years, also includes FIPS and Common Criteria EAL to meet the compliance requirements of FedRAMP,PCI,HIPAA and ISO, and expands Ubuntu security maintenance so that every software on Ubuntu can be covered.

7, the new version will continue to have Shielded VM hardening   functionality at no additional cost, which was previously enabled on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and 18.04 LTS.

In terms of high availability, Ubuntu 20.04 LTS version has the following improvements:

1. Cross-platform cooperation with Microsoft makes Windows/Linux productivity more integrated, and the new Windows Subsystem Linux v2 on Windows 10 enables the new version of Ubuntu to be more deeply and directly integrated into Windows desktops and servers.

2, the new version allows many developers to use the machine learning and AI toolchain, as well as more than 6000 snap applications on the Snapcraft Linux App Store, including Slack,Skype,Plex,Spotify, the full set of JetBrains and Visual Studio Code.

3. As the host operating system of Kubernetes, the new version of Ubuntu will still be widely deployed in public cloud and private infrastructure, and will also be widely used in containerized operation of mainframe environment.

4, will continue to run on IBM LinuxONE and IBM Z, delivering IBM support for containers and Kubernetes to drive customers to the hybrid cloud to support critical workloads.

5. Work with the Nvidia CUDA software stack to simplify AI deployment in the data center and edge, enabling industry innovation to move from faster data to AI-driven insights.

6. Work with the Intel platform to provide breakthrough optimization and performance acceleration throughout the architecture from development to the cloud environment.

7. Extend Ubuntu authentication from Dell EMC PowerEdge servers to data centers and provide solutions for Openstack,Kubernetes and AI / ML frameworks such as Kubeflow, providing a consistent infrastructure, support and services in the era of digital transformation.

To this end, Canonical has been actively and extensively established cooperation with well-known IT manufacturers, including Google, IBM, Microsoft, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Huawei, Intel, Nvidia, AMD, WireGuard, Supermicro and so on.
