Meaning of CPE in NMAP output

CPE stands for Common Platform Enumeration, meaning Common Platform Enumeration. It is NMAP's way of naming identified software, operating systems, and hardware. It has the following format:

cpe:/::::::

Where part represents the target type, and the allowable values are a (application), h (hardware platform), and o (operating system);vendor represents the vector type;product represents the product name;version represents the version number;update represents the update package;edition represents the version; and language represents the language item.

These seven items do not necessarily appear every time. For example, in cpe:/o:freebsd:freebsd:3.5.1, part is o, indicating the operating system type;vendor is freebsd, indicating the vector type is freebsd;product is freebsd, indicating the product is FreeBSD;version is 3.5.1, indicating the version number of FreeBSD.
