Editor to share with you how to install Linux on Intel NUC, I believe most people do not know much about it, so share this article for your reference, I hope you can learn a lot after reading this article, let's go to know it!
Install Linux on NUC
Now I'm going to install Ubuntu 18.04 long-term support, because I now have the installation files for this system. You can also follow this tutorial to install other distributions. The previous steps are roughly the same before the most important partitions.
Step 1: create a USB boot disk
You can download its installation files on the Ubuntu website. Use another computer to create a USB boot disk. You can use software like Rufus and Etcher. On Ubuntu, you can use the default boot disk creation tool.
Step 2: make sure the startup sequence is correct
Insert your USB boot disk into your computer and power it on. Once you see the word "Intel NUC" appear on your screen, quickly press the F2 key to enter the BIOS settings.
BIOS settings for Intel NUC
Here, just make sure that your first startup item is your USB device. If not, switch the boot order.
If you change some options, press F10 to save exit, otherwise press ESC directly to exit BIOS settings.
Step 3: partition correctly and install Linux
Now when the machine restarts, you can see the familiar Grub interface, which allows you to try or install Ubuntu. Now we choose to install it.
The first few installation steps are very simple, choosing the layout of the keyboard, whether to connect to the network, and some other simple settings.
Select the keyboard layout when installing Ubuntu Linux
You may use a regular installation, which installs some useful applications by default.
Next is the part that should be paid attention to. You have two choices:
"
Erase the disk and install UbuntuErase disk and install Ubuntu
The simplest option, which will install Ubuntu on the entire disk. If you only want to use one operating system on Intel NUC, please select this option, Ubuntu will take care of the rest of the work.
"
Other options Something else
": this is an advanced option that controls all selections. As far as I'm concerned, I want to install multiple Linux distributions on the same SSD. So I chose this advanced option.
If you select "erase disk and install UbuntuErase disk and install Ubuntu", click "continue Continue" and skip to step 4
If you select the advanced option, please follow the rest of the section below.
Select the solid state drive and click "New Partition Table New Partition Table".
It will show you a warning. Click "continue Continue" directly.
Now you can see the free space on your SSD disk. My idea is to create an EFI system partition for EFI bootloader. A root (/) partition and a home directory (/ home) partition. I did not create a swap partition here. Ubuntu creates swap partitions according to its own needs. I can also extend the swap partition by creating a new swap file.
I will keep nearly 200 GB of free space on disk so that I can install other Linux distributions here. You can use it all for home directory partitions. Keeping separate root and home directory partitions can help you save the data in the system when you need to reinstall it.
Select the available space, and then click the plus sign to add the zone.
In general, 100MB is sufficient for EFI, but some distributions may need more space, so I'm going to use 500MB's EFI partition.
Next, I'll use the root partition of 20GB. If you use only one distribution, you can optionally add it to 40GB.
The root directory (/) is where the system files are stored. Your program cache and your installed program will have some files in this directory. I suggest you read the Linux file system hierarchy to learn more about it.
Fill in the size of the partition, select the Ext4 file system, and select / as the mount point.
The next step is to create a home directory partition, and I'll say again, if you just want to use a Linux distribution. Then use up all the remaining space. Select an appropriate size for the primary directory partition.
The home directory is where your personal files, such as documents, pictures, music, downloads, and other files are stored.
Now that you have created the EFI partition, the root partition, and the home directory partition, you can click the "install Install Now now" button to install the system.
It will prompt you that new changes will be written to disk and click "continue Continue".
Step 4: install Ubuntu
When it came to this, it was very clear. You can choose your partition now or later.
Next, enter your user name, hostname, and password.
Look at 7-8 minutes of slides to complete the installation.
Once the installation is complete, you can reboot.
When you restart, you must remove your USB device, or you will enter the installation interface again.
This is all you need to do to install Linux on an Intel NUC device. Frankly, you can use the same process on any other system.
