The Samsung Galaxy S20 has three different permutations. There are 6.2in Galaxy S20s, 6.7in S20 Plus and oversized 6.9in S20Ultra. Pre-orders for the three phones will begin at 12:01 EDT on February 21. Last week, Samsung unveiled a new flagship phone and a new collapsible phone Galaxy Z Flip, which will compete directly with the new Motorola Razr phone.
The new Galaxy S20 phones have bigger competitors-Apple's iPhone, Google's Pixel, Huawei's high-end phones, and more people will actually buy these phones in 2020. To its credit, the new high-end Galaxy S20 has accomplished eight things, raising the standard of its flagship phones:
1. Start the 100x zoom camera.
two。 Take a picture of 108 million pixels.
There are two forms of 3.5G integration: Sub 6 (standard) and millimeter wave (ultrafast).
4. Add 120Hz AMOLED display to get better video and game results.
5. Provide 8K video recording.
6. Increase the battery capacity to 5000 Ma.
7. The box includes a 25 watt quick charger (and supports the new 45 watt charger).
8. For the first time, you can take 10 photos and 4 videos with one click.
Why did Samsung jump from S10 to S20?
Last year's Samsung flagship phones were the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus, and in 2018 were the S9 and S9Plus. There are S20, S20 Plus and S20 Ultra in 2020. So why did Samsung jump from S10 to S20, and why are there three models this year?
20 in S20 means that Samsung has decided to change its version number to the year 2020. All phone manufacturers are free to name their products with their own names, but this makes Samsung one of the first companies to associate product names with years, which is very attractive. It can't hurt that it has more products than most of its competitors. People's brains naturally tend to think that the more the better.
The Galaxy S20 series with three devices this year is a little less than it was in 2019. Samsung had the S10 and S10 Plus at the time, but also added a smaller S10E (budget device) and a slightly larger S105G. This year, Samsung has integrated 5G across its entire product line, so it doesn't need a separate 5G model. In addition, it imitates Apple by providing a standard brand for the cheapest devices in its product line. Apple's iPhone 11 last fall and Samsung's Galaxy S20 this year.
Check out whether the Galaxy S20 will become the most popular model in Samsung's product line, just as the iPhone 11 is the favorite way for Apple buyers. It is hoped that the S20 Plus in the middle will become the model that most people buy. Let's talk about why.
What is the difference between the three Samsung S20 models?
Let's get rid of the basics. The Galaxy S20 model offers three different screen sizes and prices:
Prices for the Galaxy S20 start at $1000, $799 in the UK and $1349 in Australia.
The Galaxy S20 Plus starts at $1200 (£999, A $1499).
The Galaxy S20 Ultra (6.9in) starts at US $1400 (£1199, A $1999).
Bookings for the three models will begin on February 21 and arrive at the store on March 6. (March 13, UK).
The Galaxy S20 contains only the 5G Sub 6 version, which provides wide coverage but does not explode at speeds above 1gb per second. Galaxy S20 Plus and S20 Ultra provide Sub 6 and mmWave capabilities, including a large number of velocity bursts in some areas. (there is one exception: Verizon plans to release a special version of the standard Galaxy S20, including mmWave, in the second quarter of this year.)
Samsung redesigned the camera system for the three phones to improve low-light-level photos, sharpness and zoom-the three things people need most in Samsung research. The new Galaxy S20 and S20 Plus cameras have 64 million pixels, while the S20 Ultra has an amazing 108 million pixel camera. These high resolutions may improve the sharpness of the photos, but keep in mind that they splice multiple images from multiple shots to get a large number of millions of pixels. Therefore, for example, 1 million pixels cannot be directly compared to 1 million pixels on DSLR and mirrorless cameras.
Another major upgrade to the camera is optical zoom, and Samsung has gone further than its competitors. The Galaxy S20 and S20 Plus get 30x zoom, while the S20 Ultra gets 100x "hybrid optical zoom", twice as much as Huawei's P30 pro 50x digital zoom. The S20 Ultra is what Samsung calls a "folding zoom lens," and a company representative explained that it can be folded to the right of the lens at the bulge of the rear camera. This sounds innovative, and I look forward to learning more about how they achieve this goal. I want to talk to my colleague Andy Hoyle about the new S20 camera.
P
Samsung has also expanded its battery capacity. The following are the measurement methods of these three models:
Galaxy S20:4000 mAh
Galaxy S20 Plus:4500 mAh
Galaxy S20 Ultra:5000 Ma
Speaking of power, all Galaxy S20 models come with a 25-watt fast charger in the box, while the S20 Ultra also has an optional 45-watt ultra-fast charger that you can buy separately. By contrast, the iPhone 11 Pro model comes with an 18-watt quick charger.
All S20 models may need extra batteries and fast charging to power the new 120Hz AMOLED monitor, which makes videos and games smoother as they move on the screen. It also makes the image clearer. Most phones today have 60Hz screens, while OnePlus 7 Pro and Google Pixel 4 screens are 90Hz. Apple's iPad Pro offers 120Hz.
Another way to take advantage of the 120Hz AMOLED screen is that all three S20 models provide 8K video recording at 24 frames per second, so the new display is an excellent viewfinder. After recording, these 8K videos can also be projected to Samsung 8K QLED or exported to YouTube that supports 8K video. With the new camera system in the S20, Samsung has also introduced a new "night delay" mode, which allows moving cars to emit flares, for example. This is one of the features I most look forward to trying.
All three phones are equipped with 12GB's RAM. Standard Galaxy S20 comes with storage space for 128GB, while S20 Plus and S20 Ultra provide storage space for 128GB and 256GB.
The first impression of Galaxy S20 Ultra
On the face of it, the Galaxy S20 Ultra is a beast-even two smaller models still have their place in today's flagship phones. But the best phone experiences are not written on paper, but made by the devices in our hands.
When you put any of the three Galaxy S20 devices in your hand, it is most noteworthy that Samsung has slightly reduced the curve of the screen edge introduced by the Galaxy S7 Edge for the first time. This will arouse complaints from some users that they often mistakenly brush the curved edge of the screen and seldom use the edge function. I've never been one of them, but I rarely use edge features. Still, the curved edges give Samsung phones the illusion that they are thinner than before, so bending is a powerful design feature. In other words, the slightly less bent S20 can maintain this feeling, but it is also easier to hold.
When it comes to holding the S20 Ultra, I've always been a big fan of phablets. Since the beginning of 2010, I have carried two phones-an office phone and a personal phone, an Android and an iPhone. In the past three to four years, this has almost always meant carrying two phablets. But even for me, the 6.9-inch S20 Ultra still feels a little too big, bulky and difficult to put in my pocket.
When zooming 100x on the S20 Ultra, the bump of the camera suddenly becomes larger, which is impossible. When you slide your fingers along the back of the device without a protective cover, brushing the bulge of the camera is sure to be harsh. However, when you slide the S20 Ultra into any Samsung-branded housing of the device, the bumps will be flush with them all. And since 75% to 80% of smartphone users have their phones in their shells, it doesn't bother me very much. However, my colleague Lynn La had a strong negative reaction to the bump, and others may feel the same way-especially if they don't use the case.
In terms of 100x zoom, when I keep zooming in and taking some photos, the image is beautifully pigmented and the edges of the object are jagged. When most other cameras have a maximum 10x digital zoom, it looks very similar to the photo-farther away. However, when you reduce the 100x zoom to 30x or 50x, you will get some high-quality images and still have an amazing range that can be used for mobile phone cameras.
Finally, I'd like to talk about my favorite new feature of Galaxy S20. It has nothing to do with any fancy specification or hardware. This is a software feature-surprising considering that software has never been an advantage for Samsung devices. The new feature, called "single shot" mode, uses different lenses and machine learning features on the S20 model to help you get the best photos or videos without thinking about it.
When something interesting happens suddenly, just click the shutter button in "single shot" mode, the phone will capture a variety of images and videos, and then you can choose which images and videos you want to keep. In single shot mode, you can capture 10 photos and 4 videos with up to one click of the button. For example, photos can be "AI best moments", ultra-wide, real-time focus, AI filters and smart cropping, while videos can be forward / backward, fast forward and original video.
Stand-alone shooting is the function that I use Galaxy S20 Ultra to test the most in the hands-on process. I had a good time and liked what I saw, but more use will be needed to decide whether to use it often and whether it can help me fully capture the moments I would have missed. But I like what Samsung is trying here, because it can make mobile photography more interesting and efficient at the same time.
