Data providers can always control the data they share. Through Azure Data Share, you can easily manage and monitor what data is shared, when it is shared, and by whom. Data providers can specify terms of use for their data sharing so that they can always control how their data is handled. Data users must accept these terms in order to receive data. Data providers can specify how often their data consumers receive updates. The data provider can revoke access to new updates at any time.

How Azure Data Share works is as follows

At present, Azure Data Share supports two sharing methods, which are based on fast finding and local sharing.

In snapshot-based sharing, data is moved from the Azure subscription of the data provider to the Azure subscription of the data consumer. As a data provider, we pre-configure a data sharing, and then invite the receiver to join the data sharing. Data users receive data sharing invitations via e-mail. After the data consumer accepts the invitation, a complete snapshot of the shared data share can be triggered. The data will be received in the storage account of the data consumer. Data consumers can receive periodic incremental updates of shared data, so they can always have the latest version of the data.

Data providers can provide their data consumers with incremental updates to the data they share through snapshot plans. Snapshot schedules are available on an hourly or daily basis. Data consumers can subscribe to snapshot schedules when accepting and configuring data sharing. This is useful when shared data is updated periodically and data consumers need up-to-date data.

After accepting the data sharing, the data consumer can receive the data in the selected data store. For example, if the data provider uses Azure Blob to store shared data, the data consumer can receive the data in Azure Data Lake Store. Similarly, if the data provider shares the data in the Azure SQL data warehouse, the data consumer can choose whether to receive the data in the Azure Data Lake Store, Azure SQL database, or Azure SQL data warehouse. If sharing from a SQL-based source, the data consumer can also choose whether to receive data in parquet or csv.

By sharing in place, data providers can share the data of their location without having to copy the data. After a sharing relationship is established through the invitation flow, a symbolic link is created between the source data store of the data provider and the target data store of the data consumer. Data users can use their own data stores to read and query data in real time. Changes to the source data store are immediately available to data consumers. From a security perspective, Azure Data Share uses the basic security measures provided by Azure to protect static data and data in transit. Data at rest will be encrypted and supported through the underlying data store. The data in transmission is also encrypted. In addition, data sharing metadata is encrypted both at rest and in transit. Access control can also be set at the Azure Data Share resource level to ensure that it is accessed by those authorized users.

Azure Data Share uses the managed identity of Azure resources (formerly known as MSI) for automatic identity management in Azure Active Directory.
