Sales of Windows PC, including laptops, surged in the first quarter of 2021 compared with the same period last year, according to a new report this week.

More specifically, global equipment manufacturers sold 49.8 million Windows PC in the first quarter of 2021, up from 30.1 million in the first quarter of 2020. The 66% increase is clearly due to the fact that more teleworkers need ways to maintain productivity.

Demand for Chromebook has also soared as sales have jumped from 4.4 million to no less than 12.1 million. The increase of 174% shows that Chrome OS is becoming an important competitor to Windows, especially in enterprises. Then, macOS devices surged 94%, from 2.9 million to 5.7 million.

Overall, global PC shipments reached 68.2 million units in the first quarter, up 81 per cent from 37.8 million in the same period last year, according to Strategy Analytics.

"Chromebook continues to dominate education because demand for primary education remains high in developed markets. The SMB market also responds well to the cost competitiveness and manageability of the Chrome ecosystem, which leads to an increasing share of operating system shipments in this segment and provides suppliers with important opportunities to slowly raise prices and add features to the SME / business world." Said Chirag Upadhyay, an industry analyst.

For laptops, Windows is by far the first choice, as Windows accounts for 73% of devices sold in the quarter. Chrome ranked second with 17.7%, followed by macOS with 8.4%.

But the bad news for Microsoft is that the percentage has actually fallen from 79.6% of total sales a year ago, while the Chrome score has never been lower than 11.7%.
