# # what is Consul Connect?

HashiCorp Consul Connect is a new feature of Consul1.2, which can simplify network topology and management, while enhancing security and maintaining high performance in distributed systems.

HashiCorp Consul is an open source program that greatly reduces the complexity of service-oriented architectures such as microservices that decouple management and security. The Consul Connect feature makes network management independent of scale, and you don't need to significantly modify the application to protect data in transit. Automatic traffic encryption: with mutual TLS and low-trust posture. Certificate management: use the built-in certification authority (CA) to provide the ability to generate, distribute, and rotates certificates without disrupting services.
