FLIR Systems recently announced the results of a recent automatic Emergency braking (AEB) test that examines how adding heating sensors and merging data with radar, visible sensors and trained neural networks can improve pedestrian detection in current AEB systems, with more information on the vibrating chain.

After announcing positive proof-of-concept test results earlier this year, FLIR and VSI Labs returned to the US Mobility Center and conducted proactive AEB tests on VSI Labs's Ford Fusion test car and the current AEB system on the Toyota Tesla 3. Carola, Subaru Forest Man and BMW X7.

These tests are designed by VSI to test AEB system performance under common actual driving conditions that are not currently included in accepted test protocols.

The results showed that performance was comparable in several European New car Evaluation Program (Euro NCAP) benchmarks for the FLIR hot melt system and significantly improved performance under challenging reality conditions (including direct sunlight when pedestrian clothes were mixed into the background) and when children entered the driveway from behind a parked car at night.

In a report in October 2019, AAA tests showed that the automatic pedestrian autofocus system now available in consumer vehicles can detect and block pedestrian traffic, which does not include thermal sensors, has insufficient signals, and is "ineffective at night".

Worldwide, the death toll from pedestrians continues to rise, with more than 6000 pedestrians dying in the United States in 2019. The use of the Advanced driver Assistance system (ADAS), especially AEB, can largely avoid these deaths, especially 75 per cent of night deaths.

Mike Walters, vice president of automotive product management, FLIR Systems components business, said: "our test results are consistent with the AAA report, indicating that adding thermal imaging to the existing sensor kit can significantly improve the AEB system."

"We also want to demonstrate to regulators, key policy makers and the public that it is possible to have a system that can improve the safety of drivers and pedestrians and help significantly reduce pedestrian deaths."

Phil Magney, founder and president of VSI Labs, said: "the current AEB system in today's market faces challenges in low light conditions, especially when pedestrians are detected walking in front of the car.

"when we developed integrated systems and these tests, we made the tests consistent with the Euro NCAP standard, but we also created challenging real-world scenarios to test the systems used in today's cars."

Two types of tests were conducted-the standard Euro NCAP test (used to benchmark VSI Lab to test vehicle performance) and five supplementary tests for all vehicles to simulate common actual driving scenarios that are currently untested.

Tests are usually conducted in accordance with European NCAP standards, including under dry conditions, with an external ambient temperature above 5 degrees Celsius, and using standard heated pedestrian targets (SPT).

From there, VSI modified the test by adding oversized white and dark clothes to SPT. In the glare of the sun, the lighting changes dramatically as the vehicle leaves the tunnel; in the night scene, children and adults SPT appear from behind parked cars in complete darkness.
