At today's Build developer conference, Microsoft announced a range of products for Windows developers, including Windows Terminal, Linux Windows Subsystem (WSL) 2, XAML Islands, React Native for Windows and MSIX Core.

The Windows terminal that can now be used in the preview is a new command-line user application that promises "graphics processing unit accelerated text rendering" in the user interface. "Application function tags; galloping windows; keyboard shortcuts; and full Unicode support, including East Asian fonts, emoticons, links, themes and extensions. Windows terminals are suitable for users of command-line applications such as PowerShell, Cmd, WSL, etc.

Speaking of WSL, it is the compatibility layer for running Linux binary executables locally on Windows, and Microsoft is working on the next version. WSL 2 is based on the Linux 4.19 kernel that will be released to Windows. The kernel uses technologies built for Azure. In both cases, it helps reduce Linux startup time and simplify memory usage. In fact, Microsoft promised developers that "heavy operations on the file system, such as installing the node package manager, will be twice as fast". WSL 2 will also support running Linux Docker containers locally, so virtual machines are no longer needed.

The Windows terminal and WSL 2 will be released in mid-June.

In addition, Microsoft plans to launch the standard general-purpose Windows platform control "XAML Islands" in late May. The XAML Islands allow you to create a people-centric experience and connect an existing WPF, WinForms, or local Win32 code base to a rich UI. The full version of the XAML Islands is included in the Windows update on May 10, 2019.

Microsoft has also released a performance-oriented React Native on GitHubs for Windows implementation. When writing cross-platform code in JavaScript, developers now have an implementation that uses the React/web skill set to quickly build native UX components.

Finally, Microsoft released a developer preview of MSIX Core, which allows MSIX packages for Windows 10 to be installed on Windows 7 and Windows 8. As a result, developers can rely on MSIX as their application installation technology, rather than managing multiple installers for different versions of Windows.
