Even though the share of VMware in China is decreasing, the virtualization technology of VMware still has an influence in the industry. VMware

VMware belongs to commercial products, and the product representatives are vSphere ESXi and Workstation. The characteristic is that the product is mature and stable, the enterprise market share is the largest, and the management and scheduling of computing (CPU/ memory) is optimized. And the VMware function, the product line is rich, is the industry benchmark, has the stable mature, universal, the virtual efficiency high characteristic. But the function of VMware is relatively simple, it only has the ability of virtualized computing, network and storage, and VMware does not have customized development services.
VMware costs some money to buy permissions and is relatively easier to install and run, while VMware is cheaper to learn. VMware's software system is closed, and the development path of the software is completely in line with VMware's own development goals, users or consumers do not have any control in this regard. OpenStack as an open source system, there is no single company to control the development path of OpenStack. With so many companies' resources invested, the development of OpenStack is diversified.
VMware's products are relatively concentrated in the field of virtualization, and the software product line required by cloud computing is not comprehensive enough; there are certain deficiencies in performance and fault tolerance when products are oriented to public cloud solutions; VMware virtualization solutions can only be used for x86 architecture, but not for minicomputers and mainframes; the price of VMware is too high and continues to rise; and the service capacity is slightly insufficient in China. There are few branches in China, and there are not many partners with implementation and service capabilities, especially the number of professional consultants and implementation consultants for virtualization.
OpenStack
OpenStack is free to use, but because of its numerous components and difficult deployment, it requires a large number of engineering resources and domain experts to support the deployment and landing of OpenStack in the enterprise, and OpenStack needs to do a lot of architecture and construction work, and supports a variety of deployment scenarios, and there are different installation processes. The entry bar for OpenStack is high, but as the size of the project increases, users will benefit from it because they do not have to pay high copyright fees. With the scale of cloud applications, the barriers to entry for OpenStack are correspondingly reduced.
Although some aspects of OpenStack are not very mature, it has the support of a large number of organizations around the world, the participation of a large number of developers, and rapid development. There are many public, private and hybrid clouds built with OpenStack, such as RackspaceCloud, Hewlett-Packard Cloud, MercadoLibre IT Infrastructure Cloud, AT&T CloudArchitec, Dell OpenStack solution and so on. In China, the popularity of OpenStack is also gradually heating up. Huasheng Tiancheng, Amap, JD.com, Alibaba, Baidu, ZTE and Huawei all have a strong interest in OpenStack and participate in it. OpenStack is likely to occupy a leading position in infrastructure as a service (IaaS) resource management in the future, becoming the "cloud operating system" standard for public, private, and hybrid cloud management.
KVM/Xen/ container
The default virtualization technology of OpenStack is that KVM,KVM is an open source product. OpenStack,KVM inherits many features of Linux system management memory, such as, memory allocated for virtual use can be swapped to swap space, large memory pages can be used to achieve better performance, and support for NUMA allows virtual machines to access more memory space efficiently. In addition, KVM also has the characteristics of large community, rich resources, free, low cost, practical verification of large-scale deployment, and its biggest advantage is integrated into the LINUX kernel.
Xen is an open source product, which has the characteristics of large community and rich resources, and it is free, low cost and verified by large-scale deployment. But the disadvantage is that deep tuning is needed to make virtualization more efficient. The function of Xen is limited when it is used alone, so it needs to configure multiple components to realize the function, and the development ability is high. At present, the market of Xen virtualization technology is gradually eroded by KVM virtualization, and the market share is not high.
Containers that are more popular in recent years are also open source products, represented by Docker. Containers solve the contradiction between development and operation and maintenance, and build a bridge between development and operation and maintenance. The container community is the best solution to achieve devops. The container community is smaller than the virtualization community, but container technology is developing rapidly. Compared with virtualization technology, large-scale practice verification of container technology is less.
Conclusion of mainstream product analysis in the industry
The VMware software suite is a bottom-up architecture, VMware's vSphere and vCloud director products rely on the free ESX (I) virtual machine manager, and ESX (I) virtual machine manager provides an excellent deployment architecture. However, this also brings problems, that is, OpenStack deployment and architecture implementation and maintenance costs are higher than VMware, at the same time, due to the relatively fast version update speed, the technical support documentation lags behind the product itself.
Although OpenStack is free to use, it requires a large number of engineering resources and domain experts to deploy and apply to production environments. OpenStack supports many deployment scenarios, and the barriers to the installation process are high. VMware, on the other hand, costs money to buy permissions and is relatively easier to install and run. For some enterprises, if they are business-oriented enterprises with weak development capacity, and the volume of business does not change much, they do not have high requirements for the flexibility of infrastructure, and pursue a stable and supported virtual environment. When the budget is adequate, it is more appropriate to use commercial VMware. If the customer has the requirements of open source software and certain operation and maintenance capabilities, and the business changes are relatively ordinary, requiring more bare metal management, orchestration, container management and other requirements, then OpenStack is more appropriate.
