Administrators can use Btrfs as the default file system for the root volume on SLES 12, replacing the original ext3. SUSE has avoided using ext4 as the default file system since SLES 11, focusing more on development on Btrfs. Rival Red Hat included Btrfs in its RHEL 7 as a technical preview, without user support for the file system, and used Ext4 by default.

SLES 12 introduces the snapper tool to restore a crashed system on a written B-tree file system (Btrfs) snapshot. Snapper allows administrators to easily revert to the previous file system state based on Btrfs snapshots. SUSE adds snapper as a feature to the Grub2 startup menu, showing the last working status of the server and saving time during troubleshooting crashes.

The third major feature of SUSE SLES is the Pacemaker High Availability cluster format. Pacemaker guarantees that the failure can be automatically transferred to another server in the cluster.
