Dock for MacOS Mojave includes a new feature that displays three recently used apps next to regular Dock app icons. The Recent Apps section of the Dock adjusts and updates automatically when you launch and exit apps. While it provides a convenient way to reopen apps that were used not long ago, some users may be reluctant to enable this feature for some reason.

If you want to disable the Recent Apps section of the Dock in MacOS, perhaps to reduce clutter or reduce the Dock's footprint, read on to learn how to make the change in MacOS 10.14 or later.

How to Disable Recent Apps in Dock of Mac OS

Go to Apple menu and select System Preferences

Select Docking Preferences panel

Uncheck the box next to Show recent apps in Dock to hide the latest apps in Dock in Mac OS

Disable the latest apps in MacOS Dock

When you turn off the Show Recent Apps in Dock switch, app icons displayed in the Recent Apps section immediately disappear from the Mac Dock, making the Dock smaller.

The following is an example of what Dock looks like with the Recently Used Apps feature disabled:

The latest apps in Mac Dock are disabled

Here's an example of the same Dock that looks like this when the "Recently Used Apps" feature is enabled, which is the default setting in MacOS:

Latest apps enabled in Dock

As you can see, you can find up to three app icons in the Dock that make up the Recent Apps section, which you can view or hide by switching the setting to On or Off.

Even if this feature is turned off, you can continue to view and access recent apps on your Mac by going to the Recent Items section of the Apple menu and finding the Applications section of the menu. For the Recent Items section of the Apple menu, you can even customize the total number of apps, documents, and items to display in Recent Items and Open Recent List.

Of course, you can always re-enable this feature by going back to Mac OS System Preferences and switching the Dock setting for "Show recent apps in Dock" back to the ON position.

While this setting switch is only available in Mac OS 10.14 and later, Mac users running older system software can use this technique to add the Recent Items menu to Mac Dock if they wish.

What's great about this is that not only does Mac offer a "Recently Used Apps" section in the Dock, but iPad iOS also allows you to hide or show the "Recently Used/Recommended Apps" section in iPad Dock in a similar way.
