Sony said it was still studying how PlayStation 5's backward compatibility works.

In an interview with Famitsu, a PlayStation spokesman asked fans to wait for more details because it can play a better role. "at present, the development team is going all out to verify that they are fully compatible. Please wait patiently for more information," Sony translated Twitter BlackKite (@ bk2128) told Famitsu. Sony confirmed in April that PlayStation 5 would be backward compatible with PlayStation 4, but gave no details. In context, PlayStation 4 is not backward compatible with PlayStation 3 because it is notorious for its complex unit processors.

Until then, however, backward compatibility has been a major requirement for Sony, as PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 can play games from their predecessors. As a de facto backward compatible solution, Sony uses its PlayStation Now service to stream PlayStation 3 games to PlayStation 4.

It is not clear what Sony means by ensuring "full compatibility". As a result, PS5 may not be able to play all PS4 games.

In addition, "complete" may refer to all four generations of PlayStation game consoles-the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. In context, Xbox One supports backward compatibility with Xbox 360 and the original Xbox. Although not all games in these generations can be played on Xbox One, Microsoft has been increasing its support for other classic games until June. After that, the company will shift backward compatibility work to the upcoming Scarlett project, which plans to run Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. Still, PS5's backward compatibility (at least within limited capacity) is important for Sony. In May, the backward compatibility of Jim Ryan, the boss of PlayStation, was "absolutely key" to the transition from PS4 to PS5. Ryan pointed out that "the key to the success of the platform lies in the initial momentum" and that backward compatibility will help attract PS4 users to transition to new game consoles faster.

PlayStation 5 will be launched sometime during the 2020 holiday.
