Necessary conditions

File path requirements

In SQL Server 2016, automatic seeding requires that the data and log file paths are the same on each SQL Server instance that participates in the availability group. In SQL Server 2017, you can use different paths, but Microsoft recommends that when all copies are hosted on the same platform (such as Windows or Linux), use the same path. Cross-platform availability groups have different paths for replicas. If your data files are located on different volumes on the copy, the behavior of SQL Server 2017 can meet your needs. Port access requirement

Availability group seed settings communicate through database mirroring endpoints. Open the inbound firewall rule for the mirrored endpoint port on each server.

Recovery model and backup requirements

The databases in the availability group must be in full recovery mode. The database needs to have the latest full backup and transaction log backup. These backup files are not used for automatic seeding, but they are required to include the database in the availability group.
