The ultimate goal of deploying vSphere is to run virtual machines on it and realize server virtualization. In order to ensure the proper operation of virtual machines, administrators can use a variety of methods to create virtual machines and deploy them to the vSphere data center. You can create a single virtual machine and then use snapshots to capture the status of the virtual machine, such as the memory, settings and virtual disks of the virtual machine, according to the installation of VMware tools (it is very easy to install VMware tools, so there is no screenshot demonstration here); you can also clone and create templates in existing virtual machines.

How to quickly deploy virtual machines and what you need to know:

Clone the virtual machine:

As the name implies, create a replica virtual machine based on the original virtual machine. By cloning the virtual machine, the virtual machine can be deployed more quickly, and a certain backup effect can be achieved. The replica virtual machine has the same virtual hardware, installed software, and properties as the original virtual machine. The original virtual machine can be cloned either in the boot state or in the shutdown state.

VCenter supports two types of clones:

A full clone is a backup that is completely independent of the original virtual machine. It does not share any resources with the original virtual machine and can be used independently from the original virtual machine.

Linked clones need to share the same virtual disk file with the original virtual machine and cannot be run separately from the original virtual machine. However, the use of shared disk files can greatly shorten the time to create cloned virtual machines and save valuable physical disk space; linked clones can easily create one or more independent virtual machines for different tasks.

The cloned Windows virtual machine SID number is the same, some cases can not be used normally, such as: join the Windows domain. You can modify the tool that comes with SID,Windows to modify SID through a third-party tool, which is located in C:\ Windows\ System32\ sysprep\ sysprep.exe.

Virtual machine template

Cloning virtual machines is a powerful tool for rapid deployment of virtual machines, but all virtual machines can be cloned, and cloned virtual machines can also be cloned again, which will lead to the danger of system collapse in the long run, thus bringing unnecessary trouble to administrators. Template is the best way to solve this problem, that is, a virtual machine that often initiates cloning is used as a virtual machine template, which is initiated by template every time a similar virtual machine needs to be cloned.

The SID number of the virtual machine cloned from the template is different and does not need to be modified.

Virtual machine snapshot

A snapshot is a "backup" of VMDK files for virtual machines at some point in time. When the snapshot task is started, the VMDK file of the virtual machine is frozen so that it is read-only, and a snapshot file is created, which will be written to all modified data in the future. Once the snapshot reply operation is triggered, the system discards the snapshot contents and rolls back to the state of the source VMDK file for snapshot recovery.

The creation method is very simple. In the real world, link to shared storage as far as possible. To create shared storage, please refer to the blog post:

Clone a virtual machine

First log in to the VCenter administration page:

Wait for the clone to complete!
