In 2010, SAP released a product, its full name is SAP High Performance Analytic Application, which is known as SAP HANA. After years of development, SAP HANA has evolved from an "application" to a high-performance application platform with built-in computing, database, analysis and prediction engines. In order to ensure its best performance, SAP HANA stores data in memory and uses persistent storage systems to recover from failures. During the normal operation of the database, the data and undo logs are automatically persisted to the hard disk during the SavePoint process, and the data changes are recorded in the redo log. Although SavePoint (Savepoint) and write log operations can prevent the impact of sudden factors such as power outages and hardware failures on the database, they are powerless when persistent storage devices fail or misoperate. In order to prevent the data loss caused by the above situation, the backup of the SAP HANA database is necessary.
1. Characteristics of SAP HANA backup:
SAP HANA backup can be divided into two parts: log backup and data backup. The specific features include:
1) the backup process of the two parts is independent of each other. Log backup will not be carried out until the first data backup is performed by SAP HANA.
2) backup and recovery are applied to the entire database, and an object in the database cannot be backed up and restored.
3) SAP HANA backup requires at least BACKUP ADMIN and CATALOG READ permissions
Second, the technical realization of HBR
HBR launched the SAP HANA BACKINT integration solution a year ago, becoming the first cloud vendor in Asia to be certified by SAP HANA BACKINT. In addition, HBR can also provide secure and efficient backup and disaster recovery protection for ECS,NAS,OSS and files in self-built computer rooms, VMware,SQL Server, etc.
The traditional backup solution, as shown in the figure below, needs to rely on tools such as SAP HANA Studio or cockpit to dump the data to be backed up to the local disk or NAS, and then upload it to OSS. You can see that in the backup solution, the configuration is very tedious, and various scripts are needed for lifecycle management.
In order to simplify this process, HBR integrates with SAP HANA through the integrated SAP HANA BACKINT interface. During the process of starting backup, SAP HANA will launch the plug-in deployed by HBR to back up the data to the backup library of HBR. HBR will fully automate the management of all steps that require script participation.
In addition, the HBR HANA plug-in follows the SAP HANA Backint interface specification, the SAP HANA database stores the streaming data into the HBR HANA plug-in, the restore is initiated by SAP HANA, and then the HBR plug-in plays back the data stream at the time of backup.
Through the above two technical means, the backup efficiency of SAP HANA is greatly improved. at the same time, in order to achieve faster data recovery, SAP HANA usually adopts the method of full backup + log backup, which leads to how to reduce the storage space of full backup. in order to solve this problem, HBR adopts the algorithm of variable length re-deletion after streaming protocol. The variable length resampling algorithm can better limit the impact of data changes to one slice or two adjacent slices. This algorithm achieves the re-deletion ratio at 30:1, can effectively reduce the storage capacity of SAP HANA full backup, and effectively reduce the storage cost of users.
3. Three ways for HBR to back up SAP HANA
Currently, there are three ways to deploy SAP HANA:
1. SAP HANA single node deployment
The HBR console sends control commands directly to HBR agent (hybridbackup) on the SAP HANA node.
Hybridbackup generates the corresponding SQL statement according to the control command and sends it to the SAP HANA database.
After receiving the corresponding SQL statement, the SAP HANA database starts the backup task and calls BACKINT to read the backup data.
BACKINT redirects the data stream to IDS for re-deletion and compression, and finally saves it in the backup library of HBR.
2. SAP HANA dual-machine HA deployment-divided into primary node and standby node. If the primary node fails, it will be switched from primary node to standby node.
HBR needs to deploy HBR Agent on two SAP HANA nodes, but only one of the data side programs (BACKINT and IDS) that work at the same time is consistent with the SAP HANA master node.
Control commands an online hybridbackup is randomly selected by the HBR console to send control commands.
Hybridbackup generates the SQL command to send the command to the highly available virtual IP address, which routes the request to the current active node for execution
3. SAP HANA Scale-out deployment-HBR backup SAP HANA scale-out is usually used for database deployment with large amount of data
SAP HANA Scale-out deployment adopts Master-worker structure and has a master node. All backup and restore commands need to be sent to the master node for execution.
SAP HANA worker also distributes part of the data generally, so when the backup is executed, the corresponding master and worker will have data streams.
Control commands are still sent by any online hybridbackup node selected by the HBR console.
IV. Advantages of HBR backup SAP HANA
Compared to backing up SAP HANA databases locally, the advantages of backing up SAP HANA databases in HBR include:
1. High reliability: the backup uses multi-copy storage, thus achieving 99.999999999% data reliability.
2. More secure: multi-user resource isolation mechanism, supporting remote disaster recovery mechanism, providing a variety of authentication and authorization mechanisms, whitelist, hotlink protection, master sub-account functions, etc.
3. More economical: the backup library adopts re-deleted storage, supports pay-by-quantity, resource packages and other forms of payment, to reduce the overall cost of ownership
4. Simpler: the operation is easy to use, and the periodic backup and log backup of SAP HANA database can be easily realized through the HBR console interface.
