Planning Office Online Server (OOS) server

To understand where we can install Office Online Server, it is easier to list all the locations where the server should not be installed. Basically, servers cannot be juxtaposed with other server roles, such as domain controllers, IIS,SharePoint,Exchange Server,Skype for Business Server, and SQL Server. In addition, we cannot install the Office client on Office Online Server.

To make a long story short, for simplicity and consistency, reserve servers for Office Online Server, and make sure you have a high-availability environment, it is recommended to use at least two (2) servers using load balancing solutions.

Certificates are always the topic of discussion about Exchange and Skype for Business design, and they also apply to Office Online Server. The good news is that we can find the synergy of all these products, and if we plan, they can share the same certificate. Here are some suggestions to help you design your Office Online Server environment, as follows:

Use public certificates (you can use SAN or wildcard certificates), but the preference is to use SAN (subject alternate name) most likely, you will use a theme alternate name (SAN) certificate that supports multiple names, and for Exchange, you can simply launch as two names to support a single site (you may need other names based on disaster recovery, there are multiple websites) depending on your environment You can use the same public certificate to perform multiple services, such as SharePoint,Exchange Server,Skype for Business,Active Directory federated authentication service, Office Online Server, and so on. As long as you keep adding names, it's cheaper, which reduces the hassle of maintaining several separate certificates for each service / application. Active Directory can resolve your public domain internally. If you have an invalid FQDN (for example: company.local), you may need to use split brain DNS in the case of creating a public domain internally, and the name resolution of that public area uses an internal server internally.

If you use OWA (Office Web Apps) in Exchange Server 2013, we need to go into some detail before introducing Office Online Server into your environment.

The main rule is about supportability. For beginners, Exchange Server 2013 supports Office Web Apps (OWA), but not Office Online Server (OOS). On the other hand, Exchange Server 2016 supports Office Online Server (OOS) but does not support Office Web Apps (OWA).

The cancellation of the plan is to ensure that you build a high availability solution for Office Online Server (OOS), which will avoid problems in the event of Office Online Server failure. We encountered a situation where Exchange Server 2016 tried to use Office Web Apps (OWA) of an unsupported scenario.

DNS configuration

According to Microsoft's recommendation, it is easier to use an effective FQDN when using a series of unified communications products such as Skype for Business,Exchange Server and Office Online Server. There are several reasons, the most striking of which is that public certificates are issued only to valid FQDN, in which case, point all Exchange Web services to a valid FQDN and use DNS (internal and public) to point the client to the correct server. Your current environment is in one of the following situations, so use the following scenario to define a location where DNS is configured to support Office Online Server.

If you have an invalid FQDN (for example, company.local,company.corp), you can create a valid FQDN region at the DNS level (created as a primary area and stored in Active Directory to ensure replication to all domain controllers), a format also known as split brain DNS. After you create a new zone that matches a valid FQDN, simply use Exchange Services,OOS,ADFS and so on as the name of the host that will be in the new zone. If you already have a valid FQDN, you only need to add a new entry for the new service that you defined on the certificate.

Either way, you only need to create a new host (An or AAAA) with the defined Office Online Server name, and in this series of articles, we will use oos.itsoul.cn, as shown in figure 01.

Deploy Office Online Server (OOS)

The process of installing Office Online Server requires several software components, and the following list contains a summary of the required software and uses the correct installation order. We are reviewing each component in this section.

Install Microsoft Visual C + + 2015 Redistributable (x64), the installation process is very simple. On the initial page, simply select I agree to the license terms and conditions, and then click install.

After downloading the ISO file, double-click it, and the contents will be mounted on the drive letter of the server. Click on the new drive and find setup.exe in the root directory of the drive

At this point we have installed the server, but it is not fully functional, and in the next article in this series, we will configure the public certificate and assign the DNS name we defined on Office Online Server.
