On Thursday, Microsoft and Internet Business Systems announced plans to connect broadband Internet to rural communities in Illinois, Iowa and South Dakota, and to connect about 126700 unserved people.

According to the press release, this interconnected partnership addresses a serious need because 36 per cent of people are in rural Illinois, 22 per cent in Iowa and 25 per cent in South Dakota, and currently do not have Internet access.

Microsoft's partnership with online business systems led to the Airband initiative, Microsoft's mission to provide broadband access to 2 million unserved people in rural areas of the United States by July 2022. The network service system will establish and implement a wireless Internet network system that can be extended to long distances and various types of terrain.

"bringing broadband Internet to underserved areas is more important than ever, especially because industries, including education, health care and business, are more dependent on Internet access," Kari Hofmann, general manager of business systems, said at the conference.

Broadband Internet not only creates opportunities for education, health care and precision agriculture, but also opens the door for the expansion of enterprises. By providing Internet access to rural communities, the talent pool is open to enterprises, providing employment opportunities for more people. The ability to work remotely is an option, and the company has the ability to open a satellite office.

According to the report, the lack of Internet access is a national problem, with 19.4 million Americans living in rural areas without a connection. Revenue from the Airband program will be reinvested in this project in an effort to provide more broadband to more regions.

The Airband project is not the only one trying to increase connectivity. Alphabet's Loon project brings the balloon-driven Internet to rural and disaster-prone areas such as Kenya and Puerto Rico. The goal of Space X is to bring satellite Internet networks to the world.

"everyone should have the right to broadband access, no matter where they live, because broadband access is a digital opportunity," Shelley McKinley, Microsoft's head of technology and corporate responsibility, said at the press conference.
