June 27-28, the National Beacon Commission Cloud Computing Standards working Group Edge Cloud Computing Technology and Standards Seminar was successfully held in Beijing. As a member of the Cloud Computing Standards working Group, BoCloud Boyun participated in the discussion with more than 100 technical experts from more than 30 industry-university-research member units, such as the Cloud Computing Standards working Group of the National Beacon Commission and the China Open Source Cloud Alliance.
On July 2nd, China Institute of Information and Communication officially released the white paper "Nine Application scenarios of Cloud Computing and Edge Computing collaboration" at the 2019 trusted Cloud Conference.
Boyun is fortunate to participate in these two tasks, on the one hand, to learn and understand the understanding of edge cloud computing by manufacturers in different locations in the industry chain, and on the other hand, it is also considering how Bo Yun can enter the track of edge cloud.
For the concept of cloud computing in a broad sense, it emphasizes the delivery and usage mode of services, which refers to services that are scalable, resilient, shared physical and virtual resource pools provided and managed on demand and easy to expand through the network. This service can be IT and software, Internet-related, or any other service. From this dimension, edge cloud computing must have the core characteristics of the concept of cloud computing, so edge cloud computing is a specific form of cloud computing.
Therefore, cloud computing and edge cloud computing are not two independent concepts, but an inclusive relationship. In other words, like elastic computing and object storage, edge cloud computing is also a kind of cloud service, which extends the power of cloud computing to the edge side closer to the terminal, and realizes the sinking of cloud computing services through unified control at the edge of the cloud. Provide end-to-end cloud services.
A concept that is easily confused with edge cloud computing is the hybrid cloud. From the point of view of the ownership of cloud resources, the concept of public cloud, private cloud and hybrid cloud explains the relationship between providers and users of cloud computing services. It is a public cloud when users are completely dependent on cloud services provided by external vendors, a private cloud when users build cloud services completely, and a hybrid cloud when they have both. Considering the complexity of cloud platform construction, the security of user data and the controllability of technical architecture, hybrid cloud may be the first choice for most cloud computing users in the future.
From this point of view, hybrid cloud and edge computing are not the same level of concept, there is no comparable line. When edge cloud computing is built by users, it belongs to private cloud, and when users rent edge cloud computing built by external suppliers, its form is public cloud.
In the 2018 white paper on edge cloud computing technology and standardization issued by Ali and the China Institute of Electronic Technology Standardization, the definition of edge cloud computing is as follows:
Edge cloud computing is a cloud computing platform based on the core and edge computing capabilities of cloud computing technology and built on the edge infrastructure. To form an elastic cloud platform with comprehensive computing, network, storage, security and other capabilities at the edge, and to form an end-to-end technical framework of "cloud-to-edge three-body coordination" with the central cloud and Internet of things terminals, through network forwarding, storage, computing, intelligent data analysis and other work on the edge processing, reduce response delay, reduce cloud pressure, reduce bandwidth costs, and provide network-wide scheduling, computing distribution and other cloud services.
From the above definition, the core feature of edge cloud computing is to provide more flexible choices for business architecture through cloud-to-cloud collaboration through the springboard built between the end and the cloud. As a kind of cloud computing services, different from cloud services such as elastic computing and object storage, edge cloud computing generally has one or more of the following characteristics:
The physical position is close to the end. Limited by physical laws, only when the physical distance between the end and the service (that is, the actual propagation distance of the network signal in the wired or wireless environment) is close enough, it is possible to produce a sufficiently low response delay and a high enough bandwidth to meet the network transmission requirements of specific business scenarios.
Unlike other cloud services that run in a small number of centrally managed large data centers, edge cloud computing is widely distributed near terminals and is more numerous.
In order to meet specific business scenarios, you usually need to customize the hardware, such as adding components such as GPU, FPGA, and so on. In some scenarios, the environment of the computer room such as wind, fire and hydropower in edge cloud computing will be relatively bad, and sometimes it is necessary to customize the hardware to adapt to the harsh operating environment of high temperature and high dust.
In the process of service delivery, edge cloud computing is usually not the final delivery form. Instead, users need all kinds of subdivided cloud services carried in edge cloud computing, including and not limited to big data processing, containers, databases, micro services, stream computing, function computing and so on. The type of cloud service hosted in each edge cloud computing is usually related to the type of business tested at the end. For example, video surveillance services usually require services such as big data processing and stream computing, but there are no particularly high requirements for other services.
At the recent trusted Cloud Conference, Xintong Institute released nine application scenarios of Yunbian collaboration, including CDN, industrial interconnection, energy interconnection, smart home, intelligent transportation, intelligent security, intelligent agriculture, cloud games, intelligent medical care, and so on. The application scenario is the driving force, and then the investment of various manufacturers in this area, to seize the tuyere, it can be predicted that the competition in this field will be very fierce. Of course, edge cloud computing involves a lot of cloud, edge, and end services and devices, and it will not win-take-all like traditional cloud computing. Enterprises at different levels of the industry must need cooperation in order to put these beautiful visions on the ground.
In order to better cooperate, the industry needs to have standards, and standardization is to achieve rapid innovation and promotion by solidifying technological achievements. As you can see, similar to traditional cloud computing, the construction of edge cloud still needs to consider such aspects as computer room, hardware, IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, unified OPS management, and so on. There is not only a recommended standardized overall architecture, but also a recommended construction plan for each layer. At the same time, there will be certain standards for cloud-to-cloud, peer-to-peer, and edge cloud interconnection in order to truly achieve the goal of cloud-side collaboration.
