The WAN consists of more than two LAN, and the connections between these LAN can cross the distance above 30mile *. A large WAN can consist of many LAN and MAN from each continent. The most well-known WAN is Internet, which is made up of thousands of LAN and WAN around the world.

Sometimes the boundaries between LAN, MAN, and WAN are so obscure that it is difficult to determine where the LAN terminates and where the MAN or WAN begins. However, the type of network can be determined by four network characteristics-communication media, protocols, topologies, and boundary points between private and public networks. Communication media are cables, optical fiber cables, radio waves or microwaves used to connect computers and networks. Usually the LAN ends where the communication medium changes, such as from a wire-based cable to an optical fiber. The LAN of wires and cables is usually connected to other LAN via fiber optic cables.
