This article will explain in detail how to use the Material Shell extension in linux to make the GNOME desktop into a tiled style. The editor thinks it is very practical, so I share it with you for reference. I hope you can get something after reading this article.
Material Shell extension: transforming GNOME desktops into tiled window managers
Material Shell is a GNOME extension, and that's the best part of it. This means that you don't need to log out and log in to other desktop environments. You just need to turn the extension on or off to switch your work environment freely.
I'll list the various features of Material Shell, but maybe the video is easier for you to understand:
This project is called Material Shell because it follows the Material Design principle. So the app has a beautiful interface. This is one of its most important features.
Intuitive interface
Material Shell added a left panel for quick access. On this panel, you can find the system tray at the bottom and the search and work area at the top.
All newly opened applications are added to the current workspace. You can also create a new workspace and switch to it to classify running applications. In fact, this is the original meaning of the workspace.
In Material Shell, each workspace can be displayed as a row with multiple applications, rather than as a program box containing multiple applications.
Tiled window
In the workspace, you can always see all the open applications at the top. By default, the application covers the entire screen as it does on the GNOME desktop. You can use the layout modifier in the upper right corner to change the layout, dividing it into two halves, multiple columns, or multiple application grids.
This video clearly shows all the above functions at a glance:
Fixed layout and workspace
Material Shell remembers the workspaces and windows you open so you don't have to reorganize your layout. This is a good feature because it can save time if you have requirements for the location of the application.
Hot build / shortcut key
Like any tiled window manager, you can use keyboard shortcuts to switch between the application and the workspace.
Super+W switches to the previous workspace
Super+S switches to the next workspace
Super+A switches to the window on the left
Super+D switches to the window on the right
Super+1, Super+2... Super+0 switches to a specified workspace
Super+Q closes the current window
Super+ [mouse drag] move window
Super+Shift+A moves the current window to the left
Super+Shift+D moves the current window to the right
Super+Shift+W moves the current window to the previous workspace
Super+Shift+S moves the current window to the next workspace.
Install Material Shell
Warning!
For most users, tiled windows can cause confusion. You'd better be familiar with how to use GNOME extensions. If you are new to Linux or you are afraid of earth-shaking changes in your system, you should avoid using this extension.
Material Shell is a GNOME extension. So, please check your desktop environment and make sure you are running GNOME 3.34 or higher.
In addition, I noticed that after disabling Material Shell, it caused the top bar of the Firefox and the docking station of the Ubuntu to disappear. You can disable / enable Ubuntu docking in GNOME's "expansion" application to change it back to its original form. I think these problems should also disappear after the system is rebooted, although I haven't tried.
I hope you know how to use the GNOME extension. The easiest way is to open this link in your browser, install the GNOME extension browser plug-in, and then enable the Material Shell extension.
If you don't like this extension, you can also disable it in the same link. Or disable it in GNOME's "extension" application.
