AmazonWe bServicesInc today announced a new open source operating system for software containers running on bare metal servers or virtual machines.

You can currently use AWS Bottlerocket in the preview. It is a split operating system consisting only of components that are absolutely necessary for container startup and operation. It supports Docker images and other images that conform to the Open Container Initiative or OCI image format.

Software containers are popular among developers because they can be used to host applications that can run on many different types of computing infrastructure without changing their underlying code.

However, software containers require a host operating system, and most of them run on general-purpose operating systems that have never been designed for this purpose. AWS evangelist JeffBarr announced Bottlerocket in a blog post. 'most of them are packet-by-package updates, which means automation is a daunting task,'he said.

As a result, updating the operating system is not only slow, but also creates security problems by increasing the attack surface, Barr said. In addition, updates can be problematic and error-prone, and inconsistencies with packages can slowly undermine the integrity of the container cluster over time.

For these reasons, Amazon has proposed Bottlerocket, which can be updated one step at a time, rather than one package at a time. The goal is to make it easier for users to update the operating system automatically through container orchestration services such as AmazonEKS.

"Bottlerocket is not a package update system, but uses a simple, image-based model that allows it to roll back quickly and completely if necessary," Barr said. " This eliminates opportunities for conflict and destruction and makes it easier for you to use choreographers such as EKS to confidently apply fleet-wide updates.

In addition, single-step updates help facilitate updates to container applications by minimizing update failures and making it easier to roll back in the event of any problems.
