Shulou(Shulou.com)06/01 Report--

How to solve the Linux 5.10 Btrfs performance drop problem, many novices are not very clear about this, in order to help you solve this problem, the following small series will explain in detail for everyone, there are people who need this can learn, I hope you can gain something.

Recently, Linux Kernel version 5.10 with long-term support (LTS) has experienced a regression in Btrfs performance, with Btrfs performance dropping sharply by 500% to 2000% in some cases.

The developer who submitted this question said that as a long-time user of Btrfs, he noticed that some daily Linux development tasks became very slow when using the 5.10 kernel, such as extracting a large.tar.zst file, which might take nearly 5 minutes instead of about 15 seconds.

Btrfs(commonly pronounced Butter FS) is a COW(copy-on-write) file system introduced by Oracle in 2007 with the goal of replacing the Linux ext file system. Btrfs adds features not supported by ext3/4, such as writable disk snapshots, support for recursive snapshots, RAID support, support for the concept of subvolumes, and online resizing of file systems. Btrfs has replaced ext4 as the default file system in Fedora 33 desktop and is widely used in Linux distributions such as SUSE and Ubuntu.

Linux kernel maintainer Josef Bacik identified the root cause of the problem before Christmas, saying it was missed in testing "because a lot of work has been done in recent weeks on Btrfs I/O performance." They may push a fix to Linux Kernel 5.10 in the near future to fix this issue.

Despite being 13 years old, the use of Btrfs as a relatively new file system has long been questioned in the community. This time, the problem has undoubtedly pushed the file system to the forefront again. A few users commented under the thread asking the question "I've been using Btrfs for years and I'm tired of it failing, recently I rebuilt my file system and went back to ext4. "
