Shulou(Shulou.com)06/02 Report--
The United States Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is preparing for a manned space mission to return astronauts to the moon. Just now, NASA completed a key test, successfully testing the launch abort system (LAS) for its Orion manned spacecraft.
This is the first time that LAS has conducted a complete stress test, including launching the Orion test spacecraft and the entire LAS system with rocket boosters.
The goal of the mission is to prove that in the event of an emergency under real launch conditions, the abort system can perform its established function of ejecting the Orion manned spacecraft at a very fast speed to a relatively safe distance from the rocket.
In this test, the Orion spacecraft was not manned, but the test went ahead as planned. Rocket boosters take the Orion spacecraft and LAS to an altitude of about 31000 feet, the cruising altitude of commercial aircraft.
At this target altitude, the abort system ignites the autonomous abort engine, separating the manned spacecraft from the rocket with a thrust of about 400000 pounds (180000 kilograms).
The move is designed to prevent Orion's manned spacecraft from being involved in a potential explosion during the max-Q phase of the actual rocket launch. Max-Q is the stage in which the rocket is under maximum dynamic pressure during launch.
Tests showed that the LAS was successfully separated, then turned around as planned to correctly position the Orion test ship, and then separated from the manned spacecraft.
The manned spacecraft then popped up its autonomous airborne data recorder, providing NASA engineers with the detailed flight records they needed to ensure that the LAS test went exactly as planned.
LAS is a component of NASA's manned launch system for the Orion spacecraft, which will help ensure that it is the safest rocket launch system ever designed by NASA.
It can be activated in milliseconds and even separate the manned part of the spacecraft from the rocket at a speed much faster than the rocket itself.
