January 13, 2022: Apple's iPhone 14 Pro model will have a 4800-megapixel camera, according to research firm TrendForce. Specifically, this refers to the rear wide-angle camera, which currently has a 1200-megapixel camera on the iPhone 13 Pro model.

Several sources, including analyst Guo Mingyi, have mentioned that the iPhone 14 Pro model will add 4800 megapixel wide-angle cameras, and he expects the upgraded cameras to support 8K video recording.

While keeping the size of the image sensor unchanged, simply increasing the megapixels of the smartphone camera will result in a smaller pixel area, resulting in less light captured, resulting in low-quality low-light photos. As a solution, Guo Mingyi has previously said that the iPhone 14 Pro model will support both 4800 megapixels and 1200 megapixels of output, probably through a process called pixel merging.

It House has learned that some Android phones, such as Samsung's Galaxy S21 Ultra, are already in use, combining data from multiple small pixels on the camera's image sensor into a "super pixel" to improve low light sensitivity. Pixel merging will allow the iPhone 14 Pro model to take high-resolution 4800-megapixel photos in bright conditions and 1200 megapixels in low light conditions, but the quality is still high.

Given the large file size of 4800 megapixel photos, the iPhone 14 Pro may take 1200 megapixel photos by default, but Apple's implementation remains to be seen.

Apple is expected to announce four new iPhone 14 models in September, including the 6.1in iPhone 14, 6.7inch iPhone 14 Max, 6.1inch iPhone 14 Pro and 6.7inch iPhone 14 Pro Max, with 4800 megapixel cameras for the next two Pro devices.
