[purpose of the experiment]

Learn how to configure the RIP routing protocol on the router.

[background description]

Suppose that the campus network is geographically divided into two areas, and one router in each area is connected to two subnets. The two routers need to be connected through Ethernet links and properly configured to achieve interconnection between the four subnets. In order to expand the number of subnets in each campus area in the future, the administrator does not need to change the configuration of the router at the same time, and plans to use RIP routing protocol to achieve interworking between subnets.

[demand Analysis] two routers are connected through Fast Ethernet ports. Two Loopback ports are set on each router to simulate subnets, and RIP routing protocol is run on all ports to realize the interworking between all subnets.

[experimental principle]

RIP (RoutingInformation Protocols, routing Information Protocol) is an early and widely used IGP (Interior Gateway Protocol, Interior Gateway Protocol). It is suitable for small similar networks and is a typical distance vector (distance-vector) protocol.

The RIP protocol uses the hop count as a measure of path cost, while the RIP protocol specifies a maximum hop count of 15.

RIP uses three timers when constructing routing tables: update timers, invalid timers, and refresh timers. It allows each router to periodically send a complete routing table to each neighbor. The routing table includes information about each network or subnet and the metrics associated with it.

[experimental steps]

Step 1 configure the hostnames and interface IP addresses of the two routers.

Step 2 configure the RIP routing protocol on both routers

Step 3 View the RIP configuration information and the routing table.
