I don't know since when, Openstack has been labeled as "cool" by many people. Especially after OpenStack announced that it would change its name next year, all kinds of speculation never stopped.

At the OpenStack Berlin summit in November, Jonathan Bryce, executive director of the OpenStack Foundation, announced a major decision that OpenStackSummit would be renamed Open Infrastructure Summit. Although many people express surprise, what is done is done. After 8 years of growth, OpenStack is transforming and will occupy new highlands with a more open attitude in the future. Open source is not only reflected in the OpenStack itself, but also should include computing, storage, networking and other infrastructure levels.

At this level, previous versions of OpenStack do have some limitations. As an early open source cloud computing management platform project, the advantages of OpenStack are open source and open, but the disadvantages are also very obvious, such as: open source capabilities are limited to the software itself, lack of large-scale cluster management capabilities, lack of new technology compatibility and so on. OpenStack is pinning all this on the September release of Rocky, which adds compatibility with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, edge computing and software containers.

I don't know whether the Rocky version of OpenStack will break the bottleneck of development before OpenStack as expected, or when the ultimate goal of "making the world run on OpenStack" will be achieved. But what is certain is that the "foundation" that OpenStack played down will not be easily wiped out. Especially in the Chinese market, if you do not choose Aliyun, Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure and other existing cloud platforms, OpenStack is the only way for traditional IT to travel to the cloud. This is also the fundamental reason why red hat, tide, Huayun and other enterprises support OpenStack.

Of course, there are more important factors for OpenStack to perform better in the Chinese market. First, China is in a period of large-scale infrastructure construction, and the market demand is huge; second, the Chinese market adheres to an open and embracing attitude towards open source technology. The OpenStack market in the United States is also growing, but at a relatively slow pace.

OpenStack entered the heyday of concept hype in 2014. At that time, even small and medium-sized enterprises wanted to transform themselves in the cloud with the help of OpenStack. In 2016, OpenStack hit rock bottom with the withdrawal of companies such as HPE, Cisco and IBM. Since the further development of the OpenStack project in 2016, something more interesting has happened, and containers and fringe devices have become popular all over the world. Although we don't see any concept about OpenStack, it is running in an enterprise private cloud environment with a mature and stable system role, and the current profitability of OpenStack is higher than in any previous stage of hype. According to the latest statistics of the foundation, the scalability of OpenStack is also increasing, with a single cluster exceeding the large-scale delivery capacity of 1000 nodes.

In the future, OpenStack will focus on continuous integration, continuous delivery (CI/CD), container infrastructure, edge computing, data center, artificial intelligence and machine learning. Currently, OpenStack has four pilot projects, including Airship, Kata Containers, StarlingX and Zuul, whose main purpose is to help users integrate and operate open infrastructure.

Therefore, no matter from which point of view, OpenStack has irreplaceable advantages, we can not follow others and casually label a mature technology as "cool".
