VMware massively deletes some virtual desktops from the desktop pool

Architecture

At present, there is a VMware Horizon 7 virtual desktop architecture, 10 HP BL460 provide about 800 virtual desktops, including resource-consuming test desktops, CPU, memory utilization of more than 80%.

Background

Testers apply for desktops in batches, and different departments have different desktop pools. some time ago, there was a table pool, a group of about 70 users left, and 10 users continued to use, so resources must be recycled. Leave it to the batch users who apply later (the batch that goes may still come back, just freeze users and keep data)

Train of thought

Freeze users, first disable the accounts of the domain controller, then keep their permanent disks, and delete unused virtual desktops in the corresponding desktop pool

Operation

1. To make a comparison, first intercept and delete the resource usage before deleting the desktop.

2. Log in to the domain controller and disable the account

3. Virtual desktop, permanent disk separation

Log in to the web console of View Horizon 7, select the permanent disk menu on the left, search for the disk according to the name of the frozen user, select the user, and click detach

4. Select a dedicated volume that backs up the permanent disk

5. After clicking OK, you can see that the progress of the permanent disk is being archived.

6. After 60 users are separated, go to the resource pool menu where the group is located, and edit the resource pool.

7. The next step is to reduce the number of desktops, and individuals have doubts. Desktops in the pool have several states, 1-available, 2-disconnected, 3-connected, 4-customizing, 5-error, if I build the number of desktops, are customizing, errors, disconnected, available desktops are priority deleted, and after these deletions are completed, connected desktops, that is, desktops in use by the user will also be deleted. Therefore, it is necessary to count the number and leave more than 3 available desktops to avoid data loss. Change the desktop pool, the maximum number of computers, from 90 to 15, and the virtual machine starts to delete.

8. Check the resources of the cluster and find that the available resources have increased significantly, which provides a guarantee for subsequent users to apply for desktop resources.

My personal operations, directly in the resource pool, select the option to delete virtual machines to delete virtual machines, and the log prompts unlimited deletion and wireless failure. It is also suggested that vcenter turn off the deletion of associated virtual machines, so that although resources are not occupied, errors still appear in the horizon backend list. I will study this next time.
