IBM users are reportedly using Flick images to train their facial recognition techniques-but don't let people know about it. Technology companies used nearly 1 million photos from the Flickr photo-sharing website to train their platform, but the people in the photos did not tell the company that they would use their features to determine gender, race or any other identifiable function, such as the color of the eyes, the color of the hair, whether anyone was wearing glasses, etc.

The images were not organized by IBM itself-it uses an open image database called YFCC100M, which was collected by Yahoo, the parent company of Flickr, for research purposes.

Although each photographer is allowed to photograph their subject, this permission does not extend to the scope of the study. However, under the Creative sharing license, these photos are granted a public use license.

"the people I took didn't know how their photos were used," said Flickr photographer Greg Peville Conte, director of public relations. The more than 700 photos he took have been used in Flickr's dataset. "it seems a little rough, and IBM can use these pictures without saying anything to anyone," he added.

However, IBM says those who use images in the study may ask to remove their faces from the library.

"We attach great importance to privacy and adhere very carefully to privacy principles, including limiting the diversity of the Faces dataset to publicly available image annotations and restricting access to the dataset to validated researchers. Individuals can choose to opt out of the dataset," IBM said in a statement.

"for more than a century, IBM has been committed to building responsible, fair and reliable technologies and believes that it is essential to strive to be fair and accurate in facial recognition."
