Those who use old Sonos hardware have four options.

The old S1 compatible speakers will be controlled by the Sonos S1 controller application; the newer S2 compatible speakers will use the new Sonos application (called "Sonos" in the app store, not "Sonos S1"). Sonos promised to elaborate on how to do this closer to time, but said it was impossible to combine S1 with S2.

The reason for the split of the entire architecture is simple: the old Sonos hardware has no processing power and other specifications to run the new software stored by the company. Owners will at least have a lot of options when looking to the future. There is no deadline for upgrading to SonosS2: there will be a notification that new software and firmware will be available in June, but the upgrade is not mandatory.
