Benshaw found that many friends were interested in the information that Sonos S2 promised to provide existing users with powerful features and make important decisions. Benshaw collated some relevant information for Sonos S2, promising to provide existing users with powerful features and make important decisions, and share them here.
Sonos is preparing for sonos2, and its new operating system will be released in June, and from then on it will power all the company's new hardware. As you may have guessed, the arrival of sonos2 is also why the company has begun to encourage some of the earliest hardware owners to consider upgrades in the past few months.
It turned out to be a more difficult process than Bisnos expected. At the end of last year, the company launched an "upgraded" service, offering a 30 per cent discount for owners of old equipment, including former Zone players, Connect, Connect:Amp, first-generation Play:5, CR200 and Bridge, to upgrade to a new version.
At that time, however, the process required putting the speakers in "recycling" mode: bricklaying effectively. The bosses of Sonos were so angry that the company withdrew the decision. Now, qualified owners of traditional equipment can still get discounts on new hardware, but they can keep existing speakers or equipment, and it still works. How it works, well, it will depend on how you configure SONOS2.
Sonos S2 is the future.
SonosS2 is "our platform of the future," the company says, which will mean developing a new application for your iOS or Android device. It will be released in June, with the exact date to be determined. Sonos promises "new hardware and experience", but it still means that demand exceeds supply.
For now, the company says it will "increase personalization" and provide higher-resolution audio formats for music and home theaters. This will take advantage of the upgraded audio bandwidth. As for the specific features, Sonos has only talked about one so far: the new room grouping option, which does some things, such as keeping in mind that you often group players to switch faster in one area.
In addition, there is a wait-and-see question. Sonos's existing application will continue to run and change its name to "Sonos S1 Controller"; you will be able to keep the Sonos system on the firmware before S2 and use it as you do now. If you have entered this ecosystem in the past few years, most of your speakers probably support SONOS2. For those with old and traditional equipment, they can make a choice.
Those who use old Sonos hardware have four options.
If you only have traditional hardware, the process is simple. 'you will continue to use the same S1 application, 'Mr. Sonos said. It will release bug fixes and security patches and retain music and voice services for as long as possible. However, because the hardware started when Sonos S2 is released is not compatible with S1, you will not be able to join the S1 network.
If you have a S1 and S2 compatible product, make a decision. The easiest way is to delete the S1 product: then the S2 compatible product can install the new firmware from June. If you prefer, you can use the exchange program (Sonos tells us that it plans to continue to offer it for the foreseeable future) and get a 30% discount on new S2 compatible devices. In this case, you don't need to send the old hardware, it will continue to work (not on the S2 network, of course).
Alternatively, the existing speaker network can use S1 controller software and firmware. However, in this case, you won't get any new Sonos products.
Finally, the sonar system can be divided into two parts. The old S1 compatible speakers will be controlled by the Sonos S1 controller application; the newer S2 compatible speakers will use the new Sonos application (called "Sonos" in the app store, not "Sonos S1"). Sonos promised to elaborate on how to do this closer to time, but said it was impossible to combine S1 with S2.
Sonos is trying to solve a thorny problem.
The reason for the split of the entire architecture is simple: the old Sonos hardware has no processing power and other specifications to run the new software stored by the company. These are not just dumb. After all, they are built-in computer speakers. Whether you find it acceptable or frustrating, in a sense, it was inevitable for Sonos from the start.
Owners will at least have a lot of options when looking to the future. There is no deadline for upgrading to SonosS2: there will be a notification that new software and firmware will be available in June, but the upgrade is not mandatory. You will be able to stick to the Sonos S1-even if all your hardware is S2 compatible-and wait to see if there are convincing features or new necessary models to prove the update.
For those users who use old S1 devices, this may be a good opportunity to consider donating these devices to new silent users or setting up a secondary network in the garage or office.
