Introduction: Windows deployment Service (Windows Deployment Services, abbreviated WDS) is suitable for the deployment of computer operating systems in large and medium-sized networks. You can use the Windows deployment service to manage images and unattended installation scripts, and provide options for manual and unattended installation. The WDS service, in conjunction with the DHCP service and the Windows active Directory domain service, remotely installs and deploys the operating system to clients that support PXE startup.

Lab environment: virtual machine Server2016, new virtual machine (no system)

The network connection between the virtual machine Server2016 and the new virtual machine is in host-only mode, and the network card IP address is 192.168.100.100.

The steps of the experiment:

1. Open the start menu in Server2016, and then open the server manager inside

2. Then we choose "add roles and functions" here.

3. Next we choose "role-based or feature-based installation"

4. Next, we select "Select a server from the server pool".

5. In the next step, we choose to add "DHCP server" and "Windows deployment service".

6. After we have made the choice, we will install it directly.

7. After installation, let's go to the "Windows Management tools" in the beginning to open "Windows deployment Service".

8. after opening it, we first click the drop-down arrow, then find the hostname and right-click the hostname to open "configure Server".

9. After opening "configure Server", we will see a wizard interface like this. We click next.

10. Next, we choose "stand-alone server"

11. The location of the remote installation folder below remains unchanged.

12. The next step will jump out of the prompt, and we will choose "Yes (Y)" to continue.

13. The next "proxy DHCP server" will not make any changes.

14. Then select "respond to all client computers (known and unknown)" in the following "PXE server initial settings"

15. Then click next and wait for it to be configured and started.

16. Then we click the drop-down arrow of the host name to see many items as shown in the figure.

17. First of all, let's set the "CD/DVD" of the virtual machine.

18. Then we select "CD/DVD" and then select "use ISO image file"

19. Next, we click "Browse" to add the image file

20. After adding the image file, we will connect "CD/DVD"

21. After connecting "CD/DVD", let's set up the boot image.

22. After opening "add Boot Image", we click "Browse" to add files.

Then we find the "DVD drive (D:)" and open the "sources" folder inside

24. After opening the folder, find the "boot.win" file and open it

25. Then we will not make any changes in the next steps until it has finished loading the image

26. After loading the Boot Image, let's go on to set up the installation Image, and also right-click and select add installation Image

27. Then click "Browse" to add files.

28. We continue to find the "install.wim" file in the "DVD drive (D:)"

29. After opening it, we click next to jump to the "available Images" interface, where we can select the version of the system in the scene.

30. The next step can be directly clicked on the next step, and we can wait for it to load.

31. After the images are all set, we will set up "DHCP".

32. Click next after entering the wizard, and then give the scope a name

33. Set the range of IP addresses here

34. Instead of setting the rest for the time being, let's go directly to "configure DHCP options". Here, be sure to select "Yes, I want to configure these options now."

35. The next step is to set up the router (default gateway).

The next step is to set the DNS address.

Click add here and go back to find this address, and then jump out of the prompt below, and we click "Yes" to continue to use this address.

37. We don't need to configure the "WINS server" below.

38. Next, select to activate the scope

39. When it's all done, we go to WDS, right-click the host name to find "all tasks", and then click "start"

Finally, it's time to witness a miracle. We start the new virtual machine we built before, and then it goes to DHCP to ask for the address and find the "boot.wim" boot image, and then to find the "install.wim" installation image to install the system.

41. In the system interface, we can select the area, keyboard and input method in the next step.

42. Enter the hostname, user name and password of our previous server.

43. Then choose the operating system.

Then select the installation area, and then wait for the system to be installed.
