Adobe will continue to offer PhoneGap as a combination of Cordova plus PhoneGap Build and Adobe Shadow. Brian LeRoux, project director at PhoneGap, points out that the decision to open source PhoneGap was made before Adobe acquired Nitobi, and since Adobe now owns the PhoneGap trademark, they had to change the name. The first name chosen was Callback, which was unoriginal, so change it again and the product is now Apache Cordova.

While many people thought the PhoneGap name would no longer be used because the code was already under a different name, the reality is that Adobe wants to continue offering Cordova under the PhoneGap brand. In the near future, Adobe will bundle Cordova, PhoneGap Build(an online app building service), and Adobe Shadow(a check and preview tool), and more mobile development tools will likely be added to the PhoneGap package in the future.

It's unclear whether Adobe will consolidate the PhoneGap brand, which developers are familiar with, or switch to another name. Also, it's unclear if they'll build private code on top of the Cordova code, but LeRoux's post leaves clues: "The only difference at the moment (between PhoneGap and Apache Cordova) is the name of the package downloaded, which will last for a while (emphasis). "
