Apple is working on a future product that could allow two iPad or iPhone to connect as workstations or laptops, according to a new patent. The concept map shows Microsoft Neo-style dimensions, with two iPad as books, another dimension, one iPad as keyboard and the other iPad as display.

The patent, called Modular Multi-display Electronic Devices, shows a small collapsible device that can be connected to an iPad or iPhone through a connector. The device will connect two iOS devices so that they can seamlessly transfer data between each other and work as a single device. The patent describes various use cases, one of which includes the use of iPad or iPhone as a keyboard with Touch Bar.

The hinge itself has been proved to work at many angles. This should allow it to support various shape factors, such as notebook style settings, or just adjacent settings for iPad book styles. It's not clear if it works on iPhone and iPad, so you can use it as a keyboard, but it's interesting and we think it's used a lot. IPhone may need a smart connector to do this.

Microsoft has released a product called Neo, which will display two monitors side by side in the form of "books". These monitors can also be used as one, but will also support the overall size of the laptop, one of which can be changed to a keyboard / touchpad combination. It is reported that the project has been postponed to 2021.

This is not the first patent Apple has applied for for the technology. The company had previously applied for a patent called "Cross-device interaction", which details how two devices work as one device when they are close to each other. The new patent seems to be closely related to the old one.

Since this is just a patent application, it is likely that this feature will never appear. Apple often applies for patents on hardware and software functions, but never provides patents for actual consumer products.
