On-demand data center relies on network virtualization

Brocade's on-demand data center strategy aims to build an on-demand data center by connecting all resources within or between data centers through an automated, efficient and flexible matrix network. In order to achieve the above goals, Brocade continues to innovate on the basis of the original VCS virtualization matrix and VDX switches, while exploring new ways of network virtualization.

The Virtualization Matrix brings forth the New

From the launch of VCS Virtualization Matrix and VDX switches in the second quarter of 2010 to the second quarter of 2013, more than 1400 customers worldwide have adopted Brocade Ethernet matrix solutions, and 400000 VDX switch ports have been sold. This lays an architectural foundation for the proposal and development of Brocade's "on-demand data center" strategy. At the end of September 2013, Brocade updated the VCS Virtualization Matrix and VDX switch again, adding many innovative features to it, resulting in an end-to-end multi-tenant solution.

In this large-scale product update, the most interesting aspects are as follows.

First, VCSVirtualFabric can allocate logical matrices to each tenant within a shared physical matrix, support OverlayVLAN, VLAN scale, and transparent VLAN services, apply any virtual hypervisor, and support cloud orchestration frameworks through open API.

Second, NAS can be better supported through VCSAutoQoS, thus extending the intelligence of VCSFabric to the storage domain. Huang Lanyi, technical director of Brocade Greater China, said that with the increase of unstructured data, the use of NAS is becoming more and more common. In the past, it was necessary to manually set the priority of stored data transmission in the network. Now, with the new AutoQoS function of VCS, the network can automatically identify and prioritize storage traffic, which enhances the stability of data transmission, reduces the packet loss rate, and greatly reduces the cost.

Third, Brocade has launched a new series of VDX6740 10/40GbE switches with leading performance, based on a single ASIC non-blocking Cutthrough architecture, equipped with 48X1/10GbESFP+/Base-T ports and 4X40GbEQSFP+ ports, 24MB deep buffering and dynamic buffering. The VDX8770100GbE module, which will be commercially available in March 2014, is suitable for backbone-core connections. The multicore CPU in the module can support scale-out processing, and each module is equipped with 6X100GbE wire-speed ports.

Huang Lanyi said that Brocade's innovation in VCS technology can meet the needs of data center networks for high performance, multi-tenancy and storage capabilities.

Virtual routers come to the fore

After the virtualization of servers and storage, the virtualization of network functions has also been put on the agenda. "We should consider the development of the network from the perspective of resources and applications," Huang said. In the future, we must virtualize the entire network. Improving network performance is only one aspect. Improving network flexibility and simplifying deployment are also very important. " In fact, Brocade began to study SDN (Software defined Network) and NFV (Network function Virtualization) a long time ago, and quickly launched network function virtualization products through acquisitions. For example, the newly launched BrocadeVyatta5600vRouter is a virtual router with telecom product quality, which is nearly 40 times faster than its competitors' similar products.

Compared with the traditional hardware router, the biggest advantage of the virtual router is that the deployment is more flexible, and the functions previously implemented on the physical network can be implemented on the software platform, and can also drift with the virtual machine. " Before the emergence of the network function virtualization technology, the main network functions can only be realized on the hardware platform, while with the network function virtualization technology, routers, firewalls, × × and other functions can all be realized by the software platform. " "Virtual router is actually a piece of software, and its development depends on the increasing processing performance of CPU," Huang said. "with network function virtualization technology, people can no longer rely on proprietary network hardware devices."

Huang Lanxiang believes that network function virtualization is a subset of SDN, while SDN covers a wider range. Brocade's Vyatta virtual router products have been widely welcomed by users, especially some Internet and cloud service providers. Amazon is said to have adopted Brocade's Vyatta virtual router. Huang Lanyi said that recently, South Korea has also seen the first Vyatta virtual router customers.
