1. Serial * is down,line protocol is down (DTE) failure:

[1] the router is not powered on.

[2] LINE is not connected to CSU/DSU.

> [3] hardware error.

Solution:

[1] check power supply.

[2] confirm that the cable and serial port used are correct.

[3] switch to another serial port.

2. Serial * is up,line protocol is down (DTE) failure:

[1] Local or remote router configuration is missing.

[2] the remote router is not powered on.

[3] Line failure, switch failure.

[4] the sending clock of serial port is not set on CSU/DSU.

[5] CSU/DSU malfunction.

[6] hardware failure of local or remote router.

Solution:

[1] set MODEM, CSU or DSU to "LOOPBACK" state, use the "SHOW INT S*" command to confirm whether the LINE PROTOCOL is UP, if UP, prove to be a post office failure or the remote router has been SHUTDOWN.

[2] if the remote router also has the above failure, repeat step [1].

[3] check whether the serial port connected by the cable is correct, and use "SHOW CONTROLLERS" to confirm which cable is connected to which serial port.

[4] Type "DEBUG SERIAL INTERFACE", if LINE PROTOCOL does not have COME UP, or the command you type shows that the number of active ports has not increased, prove that the router hardware is wrong, change the router port; if LINE PROTOCOL UP, and the number of active ports increases, prove that the fault is not on the local router.

[5] replace the router port.

3. Serial * is up,line protocol is down (DCE) failure:

[1] CLOCKRATE is missing in the router port configuration.

[2] the DTE device did not start.

[3] the remote CSU/DSU is malfunctioning.

[4] the cable is connected incorrectly or faulty.

[5] Router hardware error.

Solution:

[1] add CLOCKRATE to the router port configuration.

[2] set the DTE device to SCTE mode.

[3] confirm that the cable used is correct.

[4] if the LINE PROTOCOL is still DOWN, replace the router port.

4. Serial * is up,line protocol is up (looped) failure:

The LOOP exists in the line, and the sequence number in the active package becomes a random number when the LOOP is initially. If the same random number returns to the loop, a LOOP is generated.

Solution:

[1] use the "SH RUN" command to find LOOPBACK.

[2] use "NO LOOPBACK" to remove LOOP.

[3] if PROTOCOL is still DOWN, please contact the Post and Telecommunications Office.

5. Serial * is up,line protocol is down (disabled) failure:

[1] malfunction of the post and telecommunications office.

[2] CSU/DSU hardware failure.

[3] Router hardware failure.

Solution:

[1] look for the two-state element signal of CTS or DSR.

[2] LOOP CSU/DSU (DTE LOOP). If the fault continues, it may be a hardware fault; if the fault stops, it is proved to be a post office fault.

[3] replace the broken hardware failure.

6. Serial * is administratively down,line protocol is down failure:

[1] PORT may be SHUTDOWN.

[2] duplicate IP address.

Solution:

[1] remove SHUTDOWN with the "NO SHUTDOWN" command.

[2] A change in the duplicate IP address will be made.
