On March 12, 2019, Rancher Labs (hereinafter referred to as Rancher), a leading provider of container management software, announced the launch of a new open source project Submariner, which supports cross-cluster network connectivity between multiple Kubernetes clusters. Submariner will provide network connectivity for microservices deployed in multiple Kubernetes clusters that need to communicate with each other. This new solution solves the connectivity barriers between Kubernetes clusters and provides more ways to implement multi-cluster deployment, such as replicating databases within cross-regional Kubernetes and deploying service grids across clusters.

More and more enterprises are using Kubernetes as the basic computing platform across all public and private cloud infrastructures, and Submariner enables these enterprises to seamlessly connect, scale, and migrate workloads deployed on Kubernetes clusters, no matter what cloud these Kubernetes clusters are deployed on.

Submariner: network connection across clusters

In the past, the deployment of Kubernetes implemented network virtualization, allowing containers to run on multiple nodes in the same cluster and communicate with each other. However, containers running in different Kubernetes clusters must communicate with each other through ingress controller or node ports.

Today, Submariner creates the necessary tunnels and paths to enable containers in different Kubernetes clusters to connect directly.

The main features of Submariner include:

Compatibility and connectivity with existing clusters: users can deploy Submariner to existing Kubernetes clusters and add layer 3 network connections between nodes in different clusters.

Secure path: use IPSec tunnels for encrypted network connections.

Various connection mechanisms: although IPSec is the default connection mechanism out of the box, Rancher will enable different connection plug-ins in the near future.

Centralized agent: users can register and maintain a set of healthy gateway nodes.

Flexible service discovery: Submariner provides service discovery across multiple Kubernetes clusters.

CNI compatibility: suitable for popular CNI drivers such as Flannel and Calico.

The main usage scenarios of Submariner are:

Geographically distributed HA databases, such as Cassandra

Distributed tracking

Expand the service network across clusters
